MacKeeper macOS Compatibility and Full Disk Access
MacKeeper can be inside its published macOS range and still leave real-time protection off. The useful diagnosis isn't “reinstall it again”; it's checking the current build, processor, system extension and Full Disk Access as separate layers.

Quick answer: the live MacKeeper download page lists version 7.7, released July 2026, for macOS 10.15 or later. Generation 7 runs natively on Apple silicon, while the official legacy requirements page still names 64-bit Intel. For real-time antivirus to work, MacKeeper says you need both the Real-Time Protection system extension and Full Disk Access for MacKeeper Real-Time Protection and MacKeeper. Browser-extension and VPN permissions are separate. On a managed Mac, company policy can block local approval even when the OS itself is compatible.
The current requirement is macOS 10.15+, despite older official pages
The controlling source for a new install is the live MacKeeper download page. Checked August 8, it identifies MacKeeper 7.7, released in July 2026, and lists macOS 10.15 or later with 100 MB of space. Catalina is therefore the current floor; a Mac on Mojave 10.14 doesn't meet it.
MacKeeper's documentation hasn't moved in lockstep. The separate system-requirements article still says version 5 supports macOS 10.11–10.12 and version 6 supports 10.13+, with 2 GB RAM and 113 MB. The MacKeeper 7 announcement also carries generic 10.11+ boilerplate while describing the newer generation. Those pages are useful historical context, but neither should overrule a current page that names the current binary and date.
This distinction matters on an older Mac. An installed legacy build may still open, yet that doesn't mean it receives the same fixes, engine updates or support as version 7.7. “It launches” and “the publisher supports this configuration” are different tests. If the Mac can't reach Catalina, don't force the current installer or renew on the assumption that a version-5 footnote guarantees current protection.

The 100 MB figure is also only the publisher's minimum footprint. Definitions, scans, quarantine, logs and macOS updates need working room. A nearly full disk can make a security app sluggish or unstable even when the package technically fits. Free enough space for the Mac to operate normally before blaming Full Disk Access for every failure.
MacKeeper 7.7 compatibility matrix: what the sources actually support
A minimum-version statement lets us establish a range; it doesn't prove the vendor has run a public certification on every minor release and every Mac model. The table below therefore uses careful language. “Within the published floor” means the OS number qualifies. It doesn't mean we saw a current vendor test report for that exact point release.

Before changing permissions, open Apple menu → About This Mac and record the macOS version, processor and Mac model. Then open MacKeeper and record its version. Tahoe, Sequoia and Sonoma: compatible by floor, not a blank cheque
macOS Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15 and Sonoma 14 all sit above the published 10.15 minimum. That's enough to say they're within the current stated range. It isn't enough to claim MacKeeper 7.7 was independently tested on every Tahoe or Sequoia point release. The vendor publishes a broad floor, not a model-by-model certification matrix.
On a newer macOS, update MacKeeper before the OS upgrade, preserve a backup and keep the official installer available. After the Mac returns, open Antivirus rather than assuming background protection survived. Verify the Real-Time Protection system extension, both Full Disk Access entries and the in-app status. A green toggle in System Settings isn't the final result if MacKeeper still says protection is off.
Apple has moved extension controls as macOS evolves. Its system-extension alert guidance says an approval may appear under Login Items & Extensions on Sequoia 15 or later, while earlier systems may direct you to Privacy & Security. That is why the most reliable first move is MacKeeper's current Open Settings button: it should hand the task to the pane the installed build expects.
Don't use an Apple article about legacy kernel extensions as permission to weaken startup security. The same Apple page discusses Reduced Security for old kexts, but MacKeeper's current antivirus guide calls its component a system extension and doesn't require that step. Ordinary setup should leave Gatekeeper, System Integrity Protection and Apple silicon Full Security intact.
Apple silicon is native; Intel support carries a time horizon
The current MacKeeper FAQ says version 7.0 and above is built natively for ARM, supports M1, M2, M3, M4 and newer Apple silicon, and doesn't rely on Rosetta. The generation-7 announcement independently describes native ARM support. For a current M-series Mac, the main application should therefore run as native code rather than through Intel translation.
That doesn't mean every old helper copied by Migration Assistant is current. If an Apple-silicon Mac was migrated from an Intel machine and protection loops, compare the installed version with the live download and use the app's current permission prompts. A stale system-extension entry can survive longer than the app window that created it. Granting extra access to every similar name is a poor substitute for identifying the current components.
Intel is less clear but not absent. The official system-requirements help still names a 64-bit Intel processor, while the live download requires macOS 10.15+. Together, those statements support an Intel Mac that meets the OS floor. They don't promise how long version 7 updates will continue on Intel. Check the current page before a long renewal, especially if the Mac can't install the latest Apple security updates.
Performance complaints need their own evidence. Native ARM support removes the Rosetta question, but it doesn't guarantee that every scan is light or every Mac is fast. System extension, Full Disk Access and browser extension are three different approvals
Most broken setups come from treating every macOS prompt as the same switch. The Real-Time Protection system extension allows a signed background security component to run. Full Disk Access decides whether the approved components can inspect protected data. StopAd's Safari or Chrome extension operates inside a browser, with permissions governed by that browser. VPN approval creates another separate network component.
MacKeeper's current Antivirus help article makes the first two dependencies explicit. It tells users to enable the MacKeeper Real-Time Protection system extension, then grant Full Disk Access to MacKeeper Real-Time Protection and MacKeeper. If prompted, quit and relaunch so the app can load the new state.

The browser branch matters. A person can decline StopAd and still run Antivirus, or enable StopAd while real-time malware protection remains incomplete. Remote-control, Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions belong to a separately chosen support session; they aren't requirements for routine self-installation or background antivirus. Think of the in-app Antivirus status as the final observer. A macOS toggle shows what the operating system recorded, but MacKeeper must successfully load the component and recognize the access. Protection is ready only when the app reports it as active and a scan can reach the intended locations without repeated permission prompts.
Why Full Disk Access is powerful—and why antivirus asks for it
Apple's platform-security guide says apps that need access to the full storage device must be explicitly added by the user. Its deployment documentation describes the related “System Policy All Files” class as access to data such as Mail, Messages, Safari, Home, Time Machine backups and certain administrative settings. This isn't a decorative preference. It's a broad privacy decision.
Antivirus is one of the applications with a defensible reason to ask: malware doesn't confine itself to the few folders ordinary apps can read without consent. MacKeeper says Full Disk Access is required to scan all areas and let Real-Time Protection operate correctly. The request is therefore not evidence of malware, but neither is it a reason to approve an unfamiliar binary. Identity and purpose both matter.
Start from the verified MacKeeper app and use its Open Settings control. In the Full Disk Access list, look for the current names the vendor documents. If an extra item has an unfamiliar name, a broken icon or a path outside the installed application, stop and identify it before enabling it. An older duplicate can be a leftover; it can also simply be another component. Guessing is unnecessary.
Full Disk Access doesn't send files to the vendor by itself. It changes what a local process may read. What the application collects or transmits is governed by its own behavior and privacy terms, which is why permission review and privacy review are complementary. A user who wants only narrow antivirus protection may reasonably prefer a smaller feature footprint; the broad permission remains powerful even when its purpose is legitimate.
Where Full Disk Access lives on each macOS generation
On Ventura 13, Sonoma 14, Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26, open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access. Authenticate locally if macOS asks, enable the documented MacKeeper entries, then use Quit & Relaunch when presented. Return to Antivirus and verify the status rather than closing the case at the toggle.
On Catalina 10.15, Big Sur 11 and Monterey 12, Apple uses System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Full Disk Access. You may need to unlock the pane before changing it. Labels can move between point releases and localizations. Don't search random folders for a helper simply because a screenshot from an older guide differs. Open Antivirus, use the current button, read the macOS pane it opens and compare the component names with current vendor help. This avoids turning a layout change into a full reinstall.
If the Full Disk Access pane doesn't show MacKeeper at all, launch the installed application and open Antivirus first. The component often needs to make its request before macOS lists it. Adding an unknown executable manually is a last resort only when current official support identifies the exact path and signing identity.
If protection stays off, diagnose the first broken layer
Begin with the current app, not the deepest repair. Confirm that the installed version is 7.7 or the current version now shown on the official download page, and that the Mac runs 10.15 or later. If another real-time antivirus is active, complete a controlled handoff; MacKeeper itself cautions that several real-time engines can conflict and add load.
- Open Antivirus and read the exact status. Use its Open Settings control instead of guessing which pane applies to your macOS.
- Approve the Real-Time Protection system extension. This isn't the same as Full Disk Access.
- Open Full Disk Access. Verify both
MacKeeper Real-Time ProtectionandMacKeeperas documented by the vendor. - Authenticate, quit and relaunch. A privacy toggle may not be consumed by a process that was already running.
- Return to MacKeeper and verify. The in-app state must become active; a system toggle alone isn't proof.
- Restart once if the state is stale. Then repeat the status check before reinstalling.
If the toggle turns itself off immediately, is greyed out or returns after removal, ask whether the Mac is managed and whether the entry belongs to the current signed app. Preserve screenshots of the exact pane and status. They're more useful to support than a memory of “it kept asking.” Don't reset every privacy permission on the Mac to fix one application.
A manual system-extension removal article exists in MacKeeper's help center, but it enters Recovery and Terminal to remove a stuck component. That's an exceptional repair with a larger blast radius, not step seven in a casual checklist. Use it only when the exact current vendor instructions match the error and you have a backup. Never paste a third-party command that disables SIP or removes an unidentified extension.
If you ultimately reinstall, use the vendor's complete uninstall process and then install the current signed package. Moving only the app icon can leave permission or extension state behind. After a macOS or MacKeeper update, verify instead of assuming
Security products sit at the junction of code signing, system extensions and Apple's privacy database. A major macOS upgrade can change the Settings surface, require a component to be reapproved or expose an old duplicate. A MacKeeper upgrade can replace a component while the operating system still displays an older entry. Neither situation proves infection; both justify a deliberate state check.
Community threads from Mac administrators describe Full Disk Access toggles disappearing or appearing inconsistent after macOS updates across several endpoint products. That signal is useful because it tells us to inspect TCC and extension state after an upgrade. It isn't a measured MacKeeper failure rate, and we don't turn it into one. Product-specific claims still come from the vendor and Apple sources.
Use a short post-update ritual: record the new macOS and MacKeeper versions, open Antivirus, inspect the system extension, inspect both Full Disk Access entries, relaunch and confirm the in-app state. Run a small custom scan of a known folder before a full scan. If that works, the problem is less likely to be a global permission failure.
Don't re-enable optional browser, VPN or support permissions unless you still use those features. Updates are a good moment to reduce access, not merely restore it. A cleaner permission list also makes the next diagnosis easier because every remaining entry has a current purpose.
A managed Mac can be compatible and still refuse local approval
Work and school Macs often use mobile device management. Apple's system-extension deployment guide says an organization can approve specific extensions or prevent users from approving their own. Its privacy payload reference also allows management of System Policy All Files, and says the more restrictive payload wins when several apply.
That creates a fourth compatibility dimension: policy. The processor and macOS can qualify while the organization blocks consumer security software, disallows its extension or requires a preapproved code-signing rule. A greyed-out toggle is often a policy clue. Repeatedly reinstalling won't outrank the profile.
Ask IT whether MacKeeper is allowed, whether another endpoint product is mandatory and whether the necessary extension and privacy payloads exist. Don't remove a management profile, enroll the device elsewhere or weaken security controls to make the app run. On a company Mac, the organization owns the risk decision and may already supply equivalent protection.
Personal Macs enrolled only for work email can also have profiles. Open System Settings → General → Device Management or Profiles where present and identify the organization before assuming malware locked the switch. If the profile is unfamiliar on a personally owned device, contact the named organization or Apple Support; don't delete it blindly if it controls encryption, certificates or work access.
A safe MacKeeper permission audit takes five minutes
Open the Full Disk Access list and account for every MacKeeper-related entry. The current antivirus guide expects two named entries for core protection. Note whether each icon and name look current, and compare them with the installed app's own request. Then inspect Login Items & Extensions or the pane opened by MacKeeper and confirm the Real-Time Protection extension.
Open Safari or Chrome extensions separately. Keep StopAd only if you use it and accept the browser permissions it requests. Inspect VPN settings for Private Connect only if you use the VPN. Accessibility, Screen Recording or remote-control access should correspond to a support session you deliberately chose, not ordinary antivirus operation.
After revoking an optional permission, test the feature it belongs to. Removing StopAd should affect browser blocking, not core scanning. Revoking Full Disk Access can reduce antivirus reach and may turn real-time protection off. The point isn't to deny everything; it's to know why each powerful grant remains.

What to do on Mojave or an older unsupported Mac
Don't install the current package by bypassing Gatekeeper, changing system dates or using an old download mirror. The live 7.7 requirement starts at Catalina 10.15. A legacy MacKeeper page offering version 5 or 6 can explain what an old machine once ran, but it doesn't create current protection or a safe update channel.
First check whether the Mac officially supports a newer macOS and whether the hardware still receives Apple security updates. Back up before any OS upgrade. If the Mac can't move to a supported Apple release, treat that as the primary security limit. A third-party antivirus can't replace missing operating-system fixes, browser support and current TLS roots.
For an offline or single-purpose legacy Mac, reduce exposure: avoid primary email and banking, separate it from sensitive networks where practical, keep irreplaceable data backed up and move daily browsing to a supported device. The honest answer for some old Macs is replacement, not a clever permission trick. Buying another subscription for unsupported hardware can create a feeling of coverage without restoring the platform controls on which modern security software depends.

What macOS versions support the current MacKeeper?
MacKeeper's live download page checked August 8, 2026 lists version 7.7, released July 2026, and requires macOS 10.15 or later. That makes Catalina 10.15 the current minimum. Older help pages describing MacKeeper 5 on 10.11–10.12 or version 6 on 10.13+ explain legacy releases and shouldn't be used to lower the current-build requirement.
Does MacKeeper work on macOS Tahoe 26?
Tahoe 26 is above the vendor's published macOS 10.15+ floor, so it's within the stated range. MacKeeper doesn't publish a public per-point-release certification table for 7.7, however. Update MacKeeper first, preserve a backup, then verify the system extension, both Full Disk Access entries and the in-app real-time status after the OS upgrade.
Does MacKeeper run natively on Apple silicon?

Grant it only to the verified MacKeeper components you need and review it when you stop using the product.
Which MacKeeper entries need Full Disk Access?
The current MacKeeper antivirus help article instructs users to enable both MacKeeper Real-Time Protection and MacKeeper in Full Disk Access, then quit and relaunch if prompted. Use the app's Open Settings control to reach the current system pane, confirm the names and don't enable unrelated or duplicate-looking helpers blindly.
Is the system extension the same as Full Disk Access?
No. The Real-Time Protection system extension is permission for a signed background security component to run; Full Disk Access controls which protected files approved components can read. Why does real-time protection stay off after I enabled it?

Not for ordinary current MacKeeper setup. The vendor's current antivirus instructions use a system extension and don't tell users to disable System Integrity Protection or reduce Apple silicon startup security. If support proposes a Recovery or Terminal repair for a stuck legacy extension, verify the official article and treat it as an exceptional vendor-guided operation, not a first-line fix.
Verdict: compatibility is four checks, not one version number
Current MacKeeper 7.7 starts at macOS 10.15, runs natively on Apple silicon and still has published Intel evidence. That answers whether the app belongs on the Mac. It doesn't answer whether protection is active. The system extension, both Full Disk Access entries and the in-app Antivirus status must agree.
Keep browser, VPN and remote-support permissions in their own lanes, and treat managed-device policy as a real compatibility boundary. If a newer macOS update breaks the state, verify from the outside in—current app, extension, file access, relaunch, in-app status—before reinstalling or considering an invasive repair. That sequence is faster, safer and easier to explain than toggling every privacy control until the warning disappears.
