Decide whether AVG fits before counting product tiles
AVG now spans Free Antivirus, Internet Security, Ultimate and separate Browser, VPN, TuneUp, Driver Updater and Cleaner products. A long feature list makes that portfolio look comprehensive while hiding the more useful question: which risks and maintenance jobs exist on your devices?
The protection evidence is current. AVG AntiVirus Free 26.4 and 26.5 earned 6/6 for protection, performance and usability in AV-TEST's current manufacturer record. AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 real-world test measured 99.3% protection across 400 cases, with three compromised cases and five false positives. Those results support the engine; they do not decide whether advertising, settings, renewal or support fit one household.
Write down the devices, operating systems, people, browser habits, risky downloads, account recovery, VPN use and tolerance for commercial prompts. Then open only the guides that answer those jobs. A user with one current Windows 11 laptop may need no paid tier. A household with ten mixed devices and frequent phishing exposure may value a broader plan.
Understand the renewal, then install only what you chose
On the US store checked July 23, 2026, Internet Security for ten devices showed $59.88 for the first year and a displayed $99.99 annual renewal. Ultimate showed the same $59.88 first-year offer and $149.99 renewal reference. Those are dated snapshots, not guaranteed quotes. Session, region, tax and checkout channel can change the cart.
AVG states that one-, two- and three-year subscriptions can be billed up to 35 days before the next period. Record the merchant, order ID, next billing date and renewal total. During setup, download from AVG or a verified app store. Remove another resident antivirus first, inspect optional Browser or utility offers, restart, update, run the first scan and confirm File and Web protection. Free activates automatically; after 12 months AVG can ask whether to continue free or select a plan. That prompt is not proof that free protection has ceased to exist.
Fix one reproducible problem without creating a protection gap
Record the signed AVG process, active task, time and resource before changing anything. Installation, a definition update, first scan or large archive can temporarily use CPU and disk. The useful symptom is sustained or repeatable load after the named task has ended.
Update AVG and the operating system, restart, then reproduce once. AVG’s official Repair action is appropriate when the interface fails, a scan remains stuck, features do not work or an application update fails. Use clean reinstall only after repair and after preserving account access. Do not kill services, delete drivers or exclude an entire drive.
For a website problem, verify the exact URL, certificate and warning. Update AVG and the browser, report a suspected false positive and prefer vendor correction over a permanent exception. If an exception is essential for a known internal service, scope it to the exact origin and remove it after the test. The official website-access procedure is the primary technical reference.
Control prompts and privacy, then evaluate Browser, VPN and Android separately
AVG messages can be threat detections, disabled-shield warnings, maintenance suggestions or offers. Silent mode suppresses more than advertising, while Do Not Disturb targets selected full-screen apps. Keep real security status visible, untick product and third-party offer data where exposed, and understand that AVG says Free cannot disable every upgrade offer.
Personal Privacy separates Community IQ suspicious-sample sharing, third-party app-usage analytics and personalized discounts. Optional switches do not stop processing required for security, licensing, updates and support. Gen Digital’s privacy center and AVG product policy describe those service-data categories.
Secure Browser is a legitimate Chromium browser with useful blocking defaults, but it is optional and can duplicate Brave, Firefox or an already configured browser. Secure VPN covers up to ten mainstream devices and exposes current protocols including WireGuard on supported platforms, yet AVG also discloses connection service data and a two-year retention period in its VPN policy. Android has the strongest independent case: AV-Comparatives measured 99.6% protection versus 98.9% for Play Protect in May 2026, while the free app remains ad-supported and needs powerful permissions for features such as Web Shield.
Treat TuneUp, Driver Updater and Cleaner as maintenance—not antivirus
None of these products replaces the antivirus engine. TuneUp can remove junk and put background applications to sleep, but aggressive Sleep Mode can delay updaters, sync tools or accessibility software. Driver Updater can help locate a missing vendor package, yet Windows Update and the hardware manufacturer remain the safer first route when the device already works.
Cleaner can make storage easier to inspect on Android or Mac, but “junk” is not a security verdict and cached data can improve normal app behavior. Review every category before deletion and keep backups. Automatic cleanup saves time only when its rules match what you would delete manually.
Ultimate can make the utilities look inexpensive because several share one first-year price. Compare the renewal against the jobs you actually use. Three ignored dashboards do not become value because they are bundled.
Cancel billing and remove AVG as two verified jobs
Uninstalling never cancels a subscription. Open the merchant account, turn off renewal, capture the status and keep the order ID. AVG’s current refund procedure generally provides a 30-day route for eligible consumer purchases made through its website, a desktop application or Google Play. Apple and resellers control their own transactions.
Then remove the software through Windows Installed apps, macOS Applications or the mobile app store. Use AVG Clear in Windows Safe Mode only if normal uninstall fails. Removing one AVG application does not automatically remove Browser, VPN, TuneUp, Driver Updater or Cleaner, and removing any of them does not cancel their entitlement.
After restart, open Windows Security and confirm Microsoft Defender or the chosen replacement is active, definitions are current and one initial scan completes. Do not keep two resident antivirus engines running “just in case.” A current community recommendation thread repeatedly makes the same distinction between one real-time product and optional on-demand scanners.

Is this the official AVG support website?
No. Antivirus-Review.com is an independent editorial publication. We interpret current lab evidence and official procedures, but installers, account changes, refunds, privacy requests and cleanup tools should begin on verified AVG or app-store domains.
Is AVG Free good enough in 2026?
For many compatible Windows PCs, yes. AVG Free earned excellent current lab results and provides real-time malware protection. Paid Internet Security makes sense only when its named web, webcam, remote-access or sensitive-file controls address a real household risk.
Why does AVG keep showing popups?
AVG can show threat alerts, protection-status messages, maintenance recommendations and product offers. Paid editions expose more offer controls, while AVG says Free cannot disable every offer. Classify the message before using Silent mode, which can also hide useful security alerts.
What should I do if AVG uses high CPU or will not open?
Record the signed process and active task, let a current update or scan finish, update AVG and Windows, restart, then reproduce once. Use AVG's official Repair action before a clean reinstall, and never delete services or broad program folders by hand.
Does AVG Web Shield block safe websites?
It can produce a false positive or conflict with HTTPS inspection, browser state or another network filter. Update first, verify the exact URL and certificate, report a suspected false positive, and add only the narrowest temporary exception if the destination is independently trusted.
Does uninstalling AVG cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling changes the software on one device; cancellation changes future billing. Cancel through AVG, Google Play, Apple or the merchant on the receipt, save the confirmation, then remove AVG and verify Microsoft Defender or another primary antivirus.
Are AVG TuneUp, Driver Updater, Cleaner, Browser and VPN included?
They are separate products or bundle components whose entitlement depends on the plan and platform. AVG Ultimate currently combines several of them, but Internet Security does not automatically license Secure VPN. Check the exact product names in the AVG Account.
