How to use these antivirus reviews

Antivirus products aren't one interchangeable category. A full real-time Windows security suite watches files and processes continuously. An on-demand malware scanner runs when you ask it to. A Mac security product operates under different platform rules, while an Android security app can't be judged by a Windows malware test. This directory keeps those distinctions visible.

Our review status is an evidence label, not a permanent grade. Security software updates daily, lab sample sets change, prices renew at different rates, and a product that works quietly on one PC can conflict with another person's VPN, game or specialist application. How to read antivirus lab results without fooling yourself

A test date is part of the result

Malware samples, product builds and cloud systems change. “Scored 100%” is meaningless without the lab, product name, platform and test period. AV-TEST's April page covers March and April 2026. AV-Comparatives' current real-world report covers February through May. SE Labs' report covers January through March. We name those periods because a current-year headline can't refresh an old screenshot.

Protection and false alarms belong together

A product can block many malicious samples and still create serious friction by blocking clean software. False positives matter to developers, gamers and anyone using specialist business tools, but they also affect ordinary users: repeated bad warnings train people to click through the next one. Read the protection rate, compromised cases, user-dependent cases and false alarms as one result.

Performance is a separate test

File copying, application launch, browsing and installation measurements tell you about system impact under a defined setup. They don't measure malware protection. A low impact score can't compensate for weak protection, and a controlled benchmark can't promise how a suite will behave with your storage drive, VPN, games or development tools. Use a trial or refund window on the actual machine.

Shared engines don't create identical products

Some vendors license antivirus technology, and several brands now sit under the same corporate group. The current AV-Comparatives report discloses technology relationships, including AVG and Norton using Avast technology, TotalAV using Avira technology, and VIPRE using Bitdefender technology. Cloud reputation, behavior monitoring, web filtering, configuration and update timing can still create different results. Ownership and shared technology are a reason to compare carefully, not a reason to assume exact clones.

Missing lab coverage is uncertainty

Labs can't test every product in every cycle. Absence doesn't prove a product is bad, but it removes one of the strongest ways to verify vendor claims. For a product without current public coverage, look for a maintained official download, recent release notes, clear support channels, a practical refund path and transparent platform requirements. Then test compatibility without running two full real-time antivirus engines together.
