ESET Guides: Choose, Set Up, Fix or Leave Without Guesswork
Thirteen focused resources cover the whole ESET ownership path: current protection evidence, plans, renewal, secure banking, Android, VPN, troubleshooting, password migration, refunds and complete removal.

Choose your route: deciding whether ESET fits? Start with the full review, plans or alternatives. Buying? Compare first-term price, renewal and the separate VPN-device allowance before checkout. Already installed? Open the exact banking, performance, firewall, HTTPS, Android or VPN guide. Leaving? Export Password Manager data if relevant, cancel future billing, then uninstall and verify replacement protection.
Start with the decision, not the longest feature list
ESET’s household portfolio now spans Essential, Premium and Ultimate subscriptions, separate Windows and macOS applications, Android protection, a newly expanded VPN and a Password Manager that is being discontinued. Those names can make one checkout look like a complete answer before anyone has written down the devices, people and actual risks it must cover.
The broad review is the canonical answer to “is ESET good?” In AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 real-world test, ESET protected 98.5% of 400 cases, with six compromised cases and two false positives. Its April 2026 performance impact score was a light 4.2. AV-TEST’s March–April Windows record gave ESET Security Ultimate 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability.
Those results reward low false positives and a restrained system footprint, but no lab score chooses a subscription for a family. A buyer who needs current Android lab participation, a larger independently audited VPN, identity services or richer parental controls may prefer another product. A buyer who values quiet Windows protection, granular controls and low system impact may reasonably keep ESET.
Write down each operating system, the number of security seats, the number of people who need VPN access, whether anyone uses banking or sideloaded Android apps, and which recovery method exists outside the protected device. Then choose the smallest plan that covers those jobs. “More features” is not a security improvement when the household never configures them.
Separate plan fit, checkout price and installation
When checked on the US store on July 30, 2026, one-year Essential showed $59.99 for three devices, Premium $89.99 for three and Ultimate $179.99 for five. ESET labels those as first-term prices, and region, term, device count, promotion, tax and checkout session can change the final total. The live ESET plan page and cart—not an undated review—control the purchase.
Premium and Ultimate currently include unlimited VPN traffic, but the VPN count is not the same as the antivirus seat count. Premium supplies three VPN activations for security subscriptions covering up to ten devices and five when the security subscription covers more than ten. Ultimate supplies ten or 25. A household can therefore own enough antivirus seats while still exceeding its VPN allowance.
Automatic renewal is enabled by default for eligible direct subscriptions. Turning it off preserves protection until the paid term ends; it does not uninstall ESET or erase the remaining entitlement. Purchases through a distributor, Google Play, Apple or another merchant must be managed with that seller. Save the order ID, renewal date, renewal state and final checkout total.
Installation should be equally deliberate. Remove another resident antivirus first, download through ESET HOME or the verified product page, activate the correct subscription, update detection modules, restart when requested and run one initial scan. Confirm Windows Security recognizes the provider and that only one real-time engine is active. A pirated “free key” is a supply-chain risk, not a saving.
Configure banking, Android and VPN as separate protection jobs
Safe Banking & Browsing protects a supported browser session with extra memory, keyboard, clipboard and screen-capture controls. It cannot validate a transfer recipient, undo authorized fraud or replace the bank’s own authentication. Enable it for the financial sites and browser you actually use, then test before an urgent payment. If secure mode will not open, update ESET and the browser, confirm LiveGrid and support, and repair the named conflict rather than disabling the protection permanently.
ESET Mobile Security Premium adds anti-phishing, App Lock, Payment Protection and Anti-Theft to the basic scanner. Those tools can require accessibility, background location, device-admin and other sensitive Android permissions. Grant only the capabilities you intend to use and rehearse loss recovery from a second trusted device. Current version 12 documentation varies by distribution, while 64-bit support, Google Play services, a non-rooted phone and the exclusion of Android Go are the more stable compatibility checks.
The latest direct Android AV-TEST result we could verify is July 2025, when ESET Mobile Security 11.0 scored 6/6/6. ESET does not appear in the published March or May 2026 participant lists, so the mobile guide keeps that coverage gap visible. Google Play displayed 4.9/5 across about 1.05 million reviews and more than 10 million downloads on the July 30 recheck; a store aggregate measures user sentiment, not malware resistance.
ESET VPN is now a credible bundle rather than a token data allowance. Its current listing advertises more than 450 servers across more than 70 countries and 100 cities depending on the subscription, and its apps expose WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN variants and disguised fallback modes. Desktop has documented kill-switch controls; split tunneling covers desktop and Android; eligible Ultimate and Small Business tiers add router use. ESET publishes a specific no-logs statement, but we found no public independent no-logs audit. That distinction matters more than a marketing badge.
Identify the responsible layer before changing security settings
“ESET broke my computer” is not yet a diagnosis. Record the signed process, active task, exact message, time and reproducible trigger. A first scan, product update or large archive can temporarily use CPU and disk. A useful performance fault is sustained after the named task ends or returns under the same conditions.
Update ESET and the operating system, restart, then reproduce once. If updates fail, check time, disk space, proxy and network state before clearing the update cache through the current product controls. If the application still fails, preserve logs and account access, then use the official reinstall route. Never delete ESET drivers, services or Program Files folders by hand.
For blocked internet, printers, RDP, SMB or one application, briefly pausing the firewall is an isolation test—not a fix. If access returns, use Network access troubleshooting, Interactive mode or a narrow rule, then restore Automatic filtering. The official firewall troubleshooting procedure starts from the responsible application or device rather than an all-network exception.
HTTPS certificate errors belong to a different layer. ESET’s current SSL/TLS guidance allows a disable-and-reenable cycle to re-register a missing local root certificate, but leaving filtering off removes network-level inspection of encrypted web and mail traffic. Check the certificate chain, browser, VPN, proxy and system clock, repair the trust path, then restore inspection. Our combined network guide prevents a firewall symptom from being “fixed” by disabling the web scanner—or the reverse.
Migrate data, cancel billing and remove software in that order
ESET stopped selling Password Manager on October 21, 2025 and says the service will reach end of life on October 18, 2027 with no replacement. It also says stored data will be deleted after end of life. Do not wait for the final week. Create the password-protected JSON backup when possible, use CSV only when a destination requires it, import into the replacement and verify representative logins, secure notes, custom fields, two-factor records and passkeys before deleting anything.
A CSV export is normally readable plaintext. Keep it on an encrypted local device, never email it or upload it to a generic converter, and securely remove it after the destination vault and encrypted backup are proved. Bitwarden, 1Password and other managers map fields differently; use the destination’s current official importer rather than renaming columns blindly.
Cancellation and uninstall remain separate. Turn off renewal through ESET HOME, Google Play, Apple or the reseller named on the receipt. Save the status and confirmation. ESET’s current US consumer page advertises a 30-day return policy, but eligibility and process depend on country and seller; the refund guide routes the reader without promising approval.
Then uninstall through the operating system. Use ESET Uninstaller in Windows Safe Mode only if normal removal fails and only after backing up network settings, because the cleanup route can affect adapters and advanced configuration. Restart and confirm Microsoft Defender or the chosen replacement is active, updated and able to finish an initial scan. Removing ESET without a verified successor turns a billing decision into a protection gap.

Official documentation describes intended controls and current menu paths. Independent labs measure selected builds under controlled conditions. App stores reveal distribution requirements and broad user sentiment. Community discussions expose confusing wording and failure states, but they do not prove incidence or product quality. The strongest answer uses the right source for the exact claim.
Every price, version, lab result, store aggregate and discontinuation date in this hub is dated. If a menu label moves after an ESET update, follow the current official link inside the narrow guide and search the verified support domain for the named control. Do not follow an old registry tweak, unsigned remover or support phone number shown in a popup.
The hub is intentionally not a compressed replacement for the thirteen resources. It is a decision router. Open one page, complete the job, restore every protection layer you paused, and return here only when the next task is genuinely different.
ESET guide hub FAQ
Where should I start with ESET?
Start with the full ESET review if you are deciding whether to buy or keep it. Use the plan and pricing guides before checkout, the setup guide after choosing, the exact troubleshooting page for a reproducible fault, and separate cancellation and uninstall guides when leaving.
Is this the official ESET support website?
No. Antivirus-Review.com is an independent editorial publication. We interpret current laboratory evidence, product documentation and common failure paths, but downloads, account changes, refunds and support cases should begin on verified ESET, Google Play or Apple domains.
Is ESET good in 2026?
ESET remains a strong Windows option with low false positives and light system impact in current independent testing. It is not the universal winner: the right plan depends on platforms, VPN needs, family controls, renewal cost and whether current Android lab participation matters to you.
Which ESET plan includes VPN?
The current US offering includes unlimited VPN traffic with HOME Security Premium and Ultimate, but VPN activation limits are separate from antivirus device seats. Premium currently allows three or five VPN devices depending on subscription size; Ultimate allows ten or 25.
Why is ESET blocking my internet or a safe website?
First determine whether the alert comes from malware detection, the firewall, SSL/TLS inspection, a certificate problem or the VPN. Update and reproduce once, isolate the responsible layer briefly, then repair it or create the narrowest rule. Do not leave firewall or HTTPS inspection disabled.
What should I do if ESET uses high CPU or will not update?
Record the signed process and active task, let a legitimate update or first scan finish, update ESET and the operating system, restart, then reproduce once. Clear the update cache or reinstall only through current ESET procedures; do not delete services, drivers or broad folders manually.
Does uninstalling ESET cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling changes one device; cancellation changes future billing. Turn off renewal through ESET or the merchant on the receipt, save confirmation, then remove the application and verify Microsoft Defender or another primary antivirus becomes active.
What is happening to ESET Password Manager?
ESET stopped selling Password Manager on October 21, 2025 and says it will reach end of life on October 18, 2027 with no replacement. Export early, keep an encrypted backup, verify imports in the destination manager and securely delete any plaintext CSV copies.
