ESET Essential vs Premium vs Ultimate: Which 2026 Plan Fits?

The short verdict: buy the narrowest tier that replaces a real tool

ESET’s three home plans share a substantial security base. Paying more is mainly a decision about VPN access, cloud analysis, protected folders, encryption, identity monitoring and ransomware recovery. It isn't a ladder where the lower tier receives deliberately weak antivirus.

For a Windows household that already has a VPN, Essential is the sensible baseline. Premium becomes the value tier when its three standard VPN activations cover the people who need them and Secure Data or LiveGuard has a job. Ultimate is a specialist package for an eligible US customer who wants identity protection, router-level VPN and ransomware remediation enough to justify its five-device starting price.

The biggest 2026 correction is simple: older reviews are no longer reliable entitlement guides. Premium now includes ESET VPN, while Password Manager stopped selling in October 2025. ESET HOME Security 2026 feature matrix

Feature availability still depends on operating system. The Windows application exposes the firewall, network inspector, secure browser and most advanced controls. macOS uses ESET Cyber Security. Android uses ESET Mobile Security. iOS can run the VPN but doesn't receive an ESET antivirus scanner. Read “included in my subscription” as access to the appropriate supported app, not a promise that every endpoint has every row.

Essential: the complete security tier without bundle pressure

Essential includes the jobs most buyers mean when they say they want ESET: real-time malware protection, phishing and web defenses, Safe Banking & Browsing, a firewall, webcam and microphone controls, anti-theft functions on supported devices, network inspection, gamer mode and the ESET HOME management layer.

That's enough for a maintained Windows PC or a small household that already uses a preferred VPN and password manager. Independent evidence is tied to a specific product and date rather than a marketing tier. In AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 real-world test, ESET’s tested product blocked 98.5% of 400 cases, with six compromises and two false positives. Essential’s weakness isn't missing antivirus. It's the absence of Premium’s VPN, Secure Data, LiveGuard and Folder Guard, plus Ultimate’s recovery and identity layer. If none of those has a concrete use, upgrading buys icons rather than an outcome.

Premium: the new value tier if three VPN devices are enough

Premium adds ESET LiveGuard cloud analysis, Folder Guard protection for selected data, Secure Data encryption and ESET VPN. The VPN change is significant because several prominent 2025 reviews still say only Ultimate includes it. Current official sources say Premium and Ultimate both include unlimited VPN traffic.

Unlimited traffic doesn't mean unlimited activations. ESET’s current licensing FAQ gives Premium up to three VPN devices when the security subscription protects ten or fewer endpoints, and up to five when it protects more than ten. A family can therefore buy Premium for several antivirus devices and still have to choose which phones or laptops receive the VPN.

Premium fits a user who would otherwise buy a VPN, wants encrypted removable storage, or prefers cloud-assisted analysis of suspicious samples. It's less compelling when another VPN is already trusted, the household uses built-in device encryption, and the user has no need to isolate selected folders. Check the dated ESET price and renewal guide before valuing the extra features.

Password Manager isn't part of the calculation. ESET’s end-of-life notice says sales ended October 21, 2025, no replacement will be released, and the service stops on October 18, 2027. A new Premium purchase should be paired with a separate password manager if one is needed.

Ultimate: identity, router VPN and recovery—not “more antivirus”

Ultimate adds ESET Identity Protection in eligible markets, VPN for Router, Website Settings Review, Metadata Cleanup and Ransomware Remediation. The US store starts it at five security devices. Those capabilities can be valuable, but each needs a real deployment plan.

Identity Protection is strongest as a monitored service: set alerts, confirm which personal data and credit signals are covered, and know how to contact recovery help. Router VPN protects compatible devices that can't run a VPN app, but routing an entire home through one tunnel can affect streaming, banking challenges, local services and speed. Ransomware Remediation is recovery assistance layered on top of prevention; it doesn't replace offline or versioned backups.

Ultimate is therefore a poor upgrade when the only question is “Will it detect more ordinary malware?” It may use the highest-feature Windows application, but the commercial step is largely about recovery and privacy services. What each platform actually receives

Windows receives ESET NOD32 Antivirus, Internet Security, Smart Security Premium or Security Ultimate depending on subscription and selection. It has the richest collection of firewall, browser, network and privacy controls. Windows 10 and 11 are listed on the current US requirements.

macOS receives ESET Cyber Security. ESET lists macOS 13 or later for the current home lineup and VPN. The app protects the Mac, but ESET HOME visibility and feature parity have historically differed from Windows. Verify the exact macOS function rather than assuming a Windows table applies.

iPhone and iPad don't receive an ESET antivirus scanner. ESET VPN supports iOS 13 or later, and the ESET HOME app requires iOS 16 or later. That limitation is normal for the platform’s security model, but a product page should describe it plainly rather than count VPN as iOS antivirus.

For a mixed household, assign seats on paper before purchase: device, operating system, required security app and whether that device also needs VPN. This prevents a common surprise where five protected endpoints fit the subscription but the desired VPN activations don't. It also exposes duplicated coverage, such as paying for a Mac seat that already has another managed security product. The plan should follow the inventory rather than force the inventory to fit the package.

The subscription name and installed app name may differ

ESET HOME Security Essential, Premium and Ultimate are subscription tiers. The Windows application can still be called ESET Internet Security, ESET Smart Security Premium, ESET Security Ultimate or ESET NOD32 Antivirus. This is why a Premium buyer may not see “ESET HOME Security Premium” as the desktop app title.

ESET’s May 2026 Change your Windows application guide says the installer selects the application with the most security features available under the chosen subscription by default. The Review your activation details screen has a Change product option, and an installed application can be changed later under Help and support.

That flexibility is useful for a technical user who wants a narrower product, but most households should accept the highest-feature compatible app and configure only the controls they understand. Choose by household, not by adjective

Before checkout, list devices, operating systems, VPN users and the one advanced feature that justifies the higher tier. If the list is blank, Essential is the honest answer.
