How to Install and Set Up TotalAV Safely

Before you install: check the machine and account

Start with the device, not the download button. TotalAV's current system-requirements page lists Windows 10 and 11 for the v6 app, macOS Tahoe 26 through Catalina 10.15, iOS/iPadOS 9 through 26, and Android 5 through 16. An operating system appearing in a compatibility table doesn't mean its vendor still supplies security updates, so an obsolete platform should be upgraded rather than preserved merely to run an antivirus.

The Windows v6 install guide is more specific: Windows 10 21H2 or later and Windows 11 23H2 or later. TotalAV asks for at least 2 GB of RAM, 2 GB of free disk plus room for temporary and quarantine files, an Intel or AMD dual-core CPU, administrator rights, and an internet connection. It explicitly says ARM-based Windows devices aren't supported, a serious check for newer Snapdragon laptops; those machines need a compatible option from our Windows 11 antivirus guide.

Mac requires at least 2 GB of RAM and 1.5 GB of free disk, with either 64-bit Intel or Apple silicon M1 or newer. TotalAV notes that some Apple-silicon Macs may need Apple's Rosetta 2 compatibility component. Prepare without creating a protection gap

Write down which antivirus currently provides real-time protection and whether its subscription must be canceled separately. Installing TotalAV doesn't cancel another vendor's billing. Keep the existing protection active while you download the replacement, but plan to leave only one third-party real-time antivirus engine enabled after TotalAV is installed and verified.

Create or locate the TotalAV account that owns the plan before touching a family member's machine. The email address matters more than the device: a successful installation signed into the wrong account can look free, hide paid features, or consume the wrong license pool. Open My Subscriptions in the official TotalAV dashboard and record the plan, available device slots and next payment before adding another device.

Back up irreplaceable files and close important work. A normal install shouldn't damage data, but the security extension and first scan operate deeply enough that a restart, quarantine decision or conflict can interrupt work. This is also the right moment to remove abandoned trial antivirus products through their normal uninstallers, not by deleting program folders.

Download TotalAV from a route you can verify

The safest route is the TotalAV Online Portal linked from the company's official installation guide. Sign in, open the TotalAV product, and select Install TotalAV. If the portal is unavailable, the TotalAV setup center links the vendor's direct `download.totalav.com` buttons and the appropriate Apple or Google store listing.

Don't search for a “TotalAV support number” or use a download button inside a browser notification. Recent community threads include users who believed a startup advertisement or browser warning meant TotalAV itself was installed. A July 2026 r/techsupport popup report is evidence that the confusion occurs, not proof that every TotalAV-branded message is malicious.

How to install TotalAV on Windows 10 or 11

From the portal, choose Install TotalAV and open the downloaded file from the browser downloads list or File Explorer. Windows User Account Control asks whether to allow the installer to make changes; verify that you intentionally started this installer, then choose Yes. When the TotalAV setup window appears, select Install and let it fetch the current application files.

1. Confirm compatibility. Use the v6 path on Windows 10 21H2+ or Windows 11 23H2+ with an Intel or AMD processor.
2. Download from the portal. Avoid mirrors and sponsored download pages.
3. Approve UAC. Only after matching the prompt to the installer you launched.
4. Select Install. Keep the internet connection active while setup downloads components.
5. Sign in. Use the TotalAV account that owns the intended subscription.
6. Enable protection. Wait for automatic activation, then verify the security toggles manually.
7. Update and scan. Finish definitions and run the first system scan before declaring the handoff complete.

The current v6 flow can offer Start Scan before login. We prefer signing in first because the app can then resolve the paid entitlement and real-time protection state before you interpret results. A scan from an unsigned or free state may identify issues while leaving the reader unclear about which continuous protections are active.

Login is the activation step most people skip

TotalAV doesn't use the old-fashioned pattern where every device receives a separate product key. Its add-device instructions say to install the app and log in. The account associates the machine with the subscription and the portal's device inventory.

If paid features are missing, first compare the email inside the app with the purchase receipt. Logging in through a browser session can be convenient, but a shared computer or second browser profile can select the wrong TotalAV account. Sign out and use the exact subscription email rather than buying the plan again.

After login, open Manage Devices and find the new machine. Give it a recognizable name if the portal allows it, especially in a household with several similar laptops. Remove obsolete devices only after verifying that they're genuinely retired; otherwise a working family installation can lose its slot unexpectedly.

Enable and verify Windows real-time protection

TotalAV says real-time protection may activate a few seconds after installation or require an explicit Enable Real-Time Protection action. In the current Windows v6 interface, open Settings with the cog icon, choose Advanced, and inspect the Security toggles. Enable Real-Time Protection and the WebShield setting you intend to use, then confirm the toggles remain on after leaving and reopening the page.

A green dashboard is useful, but persistence matters more. Restart Windows once, open TotalAV, and verify the state again. If the toggle immediately falls back to off, don't keep clicking it indefinitely; confirm the paid login, Windows updates, another antivirus conflict and TotalAV's real-time-protection troubleshooter before assuming the installer failed.

How to install TotalAV on a Mac

Open the TotalAV portal and download the macOS package. In Finder, open `totalav.dmg`, double-click the package icon, choose Continue and then Install. macOS requests an administrator password to install the software. When the installer finishes, close it, open TotalAV, select Get Started Now and sign into the subscription account.

On Apple silicon, TotalAV says some Macs may need Rosetta 2 to run components originally built for Intel. Accept that request only when macOS presents the Apple-managed prompt during the official installation. Don't download a “Rosetta installer” from a third-party site.

At this point the app can launch while its protection is still incomplete. macOS intentionally separates application installation from permission to inspect protected files and load security extensions. Continue through TotalAV's real-time protection wizard rather than interpreting a successful package installation as full coverage.

Grant Full Disk Access and the TotalAV security extension

Choose Enable in TotalAV's real-time protection setup and open System Settings when prompted. In Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, enable TotalAV and authorize the change with the Mac administrator credentials. Return to the app and continue so TotalAV can install its endpoint security extension.

When macOS opens the extensions settings, enable the TotalAV Real Time or Endpoint Security extension and authenticate the change. TotalAV's current sequence then asks for Full Disk Access for its “TotalAV 5 Real-Time Extension” as well. Complete that second permission, relaunch the app, and look for an active real-time protection state.

Settings labels move between macOS releases, and TotalAV's own screenshots may show both System Preferences and System Settings language. Follow the function—Full Disk Access, security extension approval and relaunch—rather than expecting every button to occupy the same pixel. Never weaken Gatekeeper globally just to make a security application install.

Install TotalAV on Android

Use the Google Play listing reached from the official portal or setup guide, tap Install, open the app and choose Log In for an existing subscription. After login, review the permission prompts in context. TotalAV lists broad Android capabilities because cleanup, notification, device, network and real-time protection tools need different access; you don't have to treat every permission as equally necessary for every feature.

To enable the antivirus layer, open the Real-Time Protection shield and switch on Enable Real-Time. Android may then request system access needed for monitoring files or apps. Grant the access that the active security feature explains, return to TotalAV, and verify that the protection state remains active after closing and reopening the app.

If Android displays a “harmful to device” message, don't bypass it by downloading an APK from a random site. TotalAV has an official explanation and troubleshooter; begin there and confirm the store or vendor source. Set up TotalAV on iPhone or iPad without calling it antivirus

Install TotalAV from the Apple App Store, open it and sign into the account that owns the plan. The setup can request access to photos, contacts and notifications for specific cleanup or monitoring features. Choose full or limited access based on the tool you intend to use; denying contacts doesn't turn a nonexistent iOS malware engine off.

TotalAV's own real-time protection guide says plainly that the iOS app doesn't run an antivirus. Apple's platform doesn't expose the same system-wide file scanning model as Windows or Android. The app can provide WebShield, privacy, cleanup and notification functions, but a shield icon must not be interpreted as a desktop antivirus engine.

For WebShield, TotalAV's current setup opens Safari settings and asks the user to enable the extension. Add a second device without buying the plan twice

Open the official installer or store listing on the new device and sign in with the same TotalAV account. According to TotalAV, that's the add-device process. Return to Manage Devices in the portal and confirm the new installation appears under the intended account.

If there's no free slot, inspect the list for retired or duplicate devices before choosing Buy Licenses. Don't purchase more capacity merely because an old laptop still occupies a slot.

Repeat the platform permission and verification steps on each machine. One green Windows laptop doesn't prove that the Mac extension, Android real-time toggle or iPhone WebShield is active. The account centralizes entitlement; the operating system still controls local permissions.

Run the first scan without deleting useful files blindly

Let TotalAV update before starting the first system scan. Keep the computer connected to power if it's a laptop and avoid launching a heavy workload during the baseline scan. The first run can take longer because the engine sees every file without a previous cache.

Review malware detections separately from performance cleanup, browser history and duplicate-file suggestions. A quarantine action is reversible more often than permanent deletion, while a duplicate-file cleaner can remove the wrong copy if filenames are misleading. When the scan finishes, record the date, result, number of files scanned and any unresolved item. If TotalAV reports a serious active threat, disconnect sensitive sessions and avoid using the machine for banking until the finding is resolved. A clean scan lowers concern but can't prove a system is uncompromised, especially after account theft or infostealer symptoms.

Grant permissions by feature, not by habit

Security software needs unusual access because it watches files, applications and network activity that ordinary apps shouldn't see. That doesn't make every prompt automatically safe. Match each request to the TotalAV feature and platform step you just started: administrator access for desktop installation, Full Disk Access and security extensions for Mac malware inspection, Android monitoring access for real-time protection, or Safari extension access for iPhone WebShield.

Photos and contacts belong to a different category. TotalAV's mobile setup requests them for cleanup, duplicate management or related tools, not because a desktop-style antivirus engine must read every address-book entry. If you only want WebShield or account access, choose limited access where the operating system offers it and test whether the selected feature still works.

Review the permissions after setup from Windows settings, macOS Privacy & Security, Android App info or iOS Settings. A permission can be removed later, but the associated feature may stop. Document the change before blaming the antivirus for a disabled module; the useful question is whether the access is proportionate to the feature you deliberately enabled.

Hand off from the previous antivirus safely

Don't create an unprotected gap by uninstalling the old product before the TotalAV installer is available. Download the verified replacement first, preserve the old license details and perform the change while the machine is on a trusted connection. Once TotalAV is installed, signed in, updated and capable of enabling real-time protection, remove or disable the competing third-party real-time engine through its supported control panel.

Windows Defender behaves differently from another commercial antivirus. Windows normally adjusts Microsoft Defender Antivirus when a compatible third-party provider registers with Windows Security. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection and confirm which provider is active rather than forcing Defender off through registry scripts or unofficial tools.

Restart after the handoff and test TotalAV again. If both commercial products still show active real-time protection, finish the previous vendor's official uninstall and reboot. If neither is active, re-enable the known working protection immediately while you diagnose TotalAV; a product preference is never worth leaving the machine exposed.

Set up the first week, not only the first scan

Open TotalAV's update control and verify that automatic updates are enabled. TotalAV's requirements page says an internet connection is needed for automatic updates and optimal detection, so a laptop that lives offline needs an explicit update routine before scanning new downloads. Check the version and last-update time again after the first restart.

Schedule a scan at a time when the computer is usually awake and connected to power. A 3 a.m. schedule is decorative on a laptop that sleeps every night. Use a quick or smart scan for routine checks and a broader system scan after setup or a credible exposure; the later scan guide in this cluster will own the detailed differences and exclusion policy.

Finally, tune notifications rather than switching all of them off. Keep malware, protection-disabled, update-failure and subscription-state alerts visible. Marketing or cleanup reminders can be reduced if the interface allows it. A quiet security product is useful only when the alerts that remain still tell you about a real loss of protection.

Fix the most common installation failures
