Intego ONE vs X9: the short verdict

ONE is the better default for a Mac that meets its requirements. The current Intego ONE product page puts Antivirus, Firewall, SmartClean and VPN behind one interface, one account login and a current tier ladder. That removes much of the update and navigation overhead of maintaining several X9 apps.

X9 still has two legitimate reasons to exist: older compatible Macs and legacy utilities that ONE doesn't replace. Intego explicitly says an active X9 customer may decline migration and remain on the maintained legacy subscription. A user who relies on ContentBarrier or Personal Backup shouldn't upgrade until parental-control and backup replacements are chosen.

ONE and X9 feature matrix

The matrix is a product boundary, not a quality score. VirusBarrier and the ONE antivirus perform the same broad job, but independent 2026 lab results name ONE rather than every legacy X9 combination. ONE solves the separate-app problem—but also narrows the bundle

Intego's July 7 official ONE-vs-X9 comparison describes ONE as the integrated successor. X9 divides security, VPN, performance, content restriction and backup across applications, while ONE combines its supported current modules in one app. Updates and navigation become simpler because the user isn't hopping between VirusBarrier, NetBarrier and separate utility windows.

The simplification is real, but the marketing phrase “all in one” needs a boundary. ONE's current four-tool list is Antivirus, Firewall, SmartClean and VPN. It doesn't carry forward every parental-control and backup utility that once arrived in Mac Premium Bundle, so fewer windows can also mean fewer categories.

VirusBarrier and NetBarrier become Antivirus and Firewall

Mac Internet Security X9 contains VirusBarrier for real-time/on-demand malware scanning and NetBarrier for incoming and outgoing connection rules. ONE keeps both security jobs as integrated Antivirus and Firewall modules in Essential, Advanced and Complete. That is why Intego maps the old security bundle to ONE Essential rather than requiring a higher tier.

The practical benefit is shared status and a single control surface. The limitation doesn't vanish: AV-Comparatives reported no malicious/fraudulent-site protection in the ONE 1.2 app it tested in May 2026. A unified firewall and antivirus shouldn't be misread as independently verified browser-level anti-phishing coverage.

SmartClean replaces the cleanup role, not every Washing Machine behavior

Mac Premium Bundle X9 included Washing Machine as a separate cleanup and organization tool. ONE Advanced and Complete use SmartClean for junk files, app removal, disk monitoring, RAM management and related optimization tasks. The role overlaps enough for Intego to map Premium Bundle X9 to Advanced, but the interfaces and exact workflows aren't the same product.

Before deleting Washing Machine, compare the routines you actually use rather than the category name. A current SmartClean user may value one-click access inside ONE, while a legacy user may have organization habits that need a manual replacement. Neither cleanup module changes the antivirus detection engine.

VPN moves from an add-on to the Complete tier

X9's core bundles didn't make Privacy Protection VPN an inherent module; offer pages presented it as a paid add-on. ONE Complete places Intego VPN in the unified app beside Antivirus, Firewall and SmartClean. Essential and Advanced don't inherit the VPN merely because ONE's product page discusses it.

Migration therefore has two billing questions: whether Complete is the selected ONE tier and whether an older Privacy Protection subscription remains active. Intego warns that separately purchased VPN services can continue billing after an eligible X9 subscription is upgraded. Canceling the old add-on is a separate action from choosing Complete.

ContentBarrier and Personal Backup don't have ONE equivalents

The current ONE tier table lists no parental-control or backup module. Mac Premium Bundle X9, by contrast, includes ContentBarrier for content restrictions and Personal Backup for backup/synchronization tasks. Those are the two biggest losses hidden by a simple “Premium Bundle → Advanced” mapping.

A family still using ContentBarrier must choose whether macOS Screen Time, router/DNS controls or another service can replace its filtering and supervision. A Personal Backup user needs a tested restore path through Time Machine or another versioned backup before retiring the X9 app. Migration isn't complete when ONE opens successfully; it's complete when every old job has an owner.

ONE raises the Mac floor; X9 remains useful below it

ONE requires macOS 12.4 or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon processor, at least 8 GB RAM and 2 GB free storage. Intego's current legacy download table lists X9 applications for macOS 10.13 through macOS 15 Sequoia with 1.5 GB free storage and internet access. That table doesn't establish X9 support for macOS 26 Tahoe.

Apple Silicon isn't itself a reason to abandon X9. Intego's M-series compatibility page names native-support minimum versions for VirusBarrier, NetBarrier, Washing Machine, Personal Backup, ContentBarrier, NetUpdate and common components. The decisive gap is often OS/RAM and product maintenance, not processor brand.

ONE uses account activation; X9 uses serial numbers and NetUpdate

X9 customers are used to serial numbers, deauthorization and the NetUpdate utility. Virus definitions, filters and application updates appear through the legacy updater. ONE activates by signing in with the registered Intego email and password, then manages the subscription through the current account interface.

Intego's upgrade instructions say to use Synchronise Account inside ONE if the upgraded entitlement doesn't appear. That's an account refresh, not a reason to paste an X9 serial into the new app. Keep the serial privately for legacy recovery while the migration is being verified.

The complimentary upgrade maps bundles, not every utility

Intego's July 11 X9 upgrade FAQ maps Mac Internet Security X9 to ONE Essential and Mac Premium Bundle X9 to ONE Advanced. Eligible active subscriptions can receive that mapped upgrade without an extra migration fee, then the user may choose a different ONE tier in the account.

The same document says the old X9 price can't necessarily be preserved and ONE renewal pricing applies. It also excludes existing “dual protection” subscriptions that cover Windows from the automatic upgrade path. ONE Mac seats don't become Windows seats, so a mixed-device household must inventory licenses before clicking the upgrade tile.

Old add-ons can keep billing after the core upgrade

The upgrade changes the eligible X9 security subscription, not every item ever bought from Intego. Intego says separately purchased Privacy Protection VPN, Personal Backup, ContentBarrier or other services can remain active in the legacy account and continue their own payments. The current payment method may also carry forward to the ONE renewal.

Open both the current ONE account and the legacy subscription view after migration. Match every line item to an installed app and a needed job, then cancel unwanted future renewals explicitly. Intego's July migration articles disagree on some leftovers

The official documents are clear that ONE removes the legacy antivirus component to prevent conflicts. They're less consistent about the rest. A July 10 installation article says the installer removes legacy components except Privacy Protection and Personal Backup, while the July 11 upgrade FAQ describes additional old utilities continuing alongside ONE.

We don't resolve that contradiction by guessing. Before migration, record the installed applications and subscription lines. After installation, check each app, system extension, network filter and renewal separately; use Intego's supported uninstall process for leftovers instead of dragging applications to Trash.

Keep X9 when compatibility or a legacy job matters more than consolidation

Intego says an X9 customer may decline the upgrade and remain on the maintained subscription. That's reasonable when a Mac runs below macOS 12.4, has less than 8 GB RAM, or still depends on ContentBarrier or Personal Backup. It's also the safer temporary choice when a five-Mac license includes older systems that can't all move together.

The company recommends a separate ONE purchase for compatible Macs when other covered Macs must remain on X9. If the entire eligible multi-Mac X9 subscription is upgraded, the old X9 entitlement may continue only through the paid term and end at the next renewal. Split the fleet deliberately rather than discovering that limitation after the account conversion.

ONE upgrades are easier than downgrades

Current ONE accounts can upgrade tier, term or Mac count through Your Plan. Intego's downgrade guide says moving to a lower tier or fewer devices isn't a direct in-account change. The usual route is turning off auto-renewal, keeping the current benefits until expiry and purchasing the desired lower plan afterward.

That asymmetry matters during X9 migration. Don't choose Complete “just in case” if Essential or Advanced owns the real jobs, because stepping down later can involve waiting for the term to end or coordinating a separate refund/rebuy inside the 30-day window.

Migration checklist: prove every job and charge

• Inventory apps: VirusBarrier, NetBarrier, Washing Machine, ContentBarrier, Personal Backup and Privacy Protection.
• Inventory subscriptions: core X9 bundle, add-ons, Mac count, term, renewal date and future amount.
• Check ONE requirements: macOS 12.4+, Intel/Apple Silicon, 8 GB RAM, 2 GB storage, Full Disk Access and network-extension permission.
• Assign equivalents: Antivirus, Firewall, SmartClean and VPN; explicitly replace backup and parental controls.
• Capture the upgrade summary: mapped ONE tier, renewal price, payment method and what happens to X9.
• Verify after install: account entitlement, real-time protection, firewall, old apps, system/network extensions and separate billing.
• Test recovery: restore a file from the replacement backup before removing Personal Backup.

Don't run two real-time antivirus engines while “testing” the migration. ONE is expected to remove the X9 antivirus component for that reason. If the account or installed state doesn't match the upgrade summary, stop changing components and use the saved evidence with Intego support.

Who should choose each product generation?
