McAfee High CPU, Memory or Disk Usage: Diagnose and Fix It
A short scan or update burst can be normal. Persistent load after the PC has settled is different. This guide shows how to tell CPU, memory pressure and disk contention apart before changing protection.
Quick answer: High McAfee CPU, memory or disk use isn't automatically a fault. First restart Windows, wait ten minutes without opening other apps, then sort Task Manager by CPU, Memory and Disk while noting whether McAfee is updating, scanning, or reacting to a large file operation. A short burst that falls after the task finishes is expected. Persistent McAfee load while the PC is otherwise idle needs investigation: confirm there's only one real-time antivirus, install McAfee and Windows updates, check free disk space and Windows device health, then use the McAfee repair route. Test exclusions only for a trusted, narrow path that reliably reproduces the load, and remove the exclusion afterward. If repair fails, use a clean reinstall while verifying Microsoft Defender covers the transition. Don't force-end protected services or exclude an entire drive.
Why good lab scores and a slow PC can both be true
McAfee isn't currently a poor performer in standardized consumer lab testing. In the AV-Comparatives April 2026 Performance Test, McAfee posted an AV-C score of 90, a Procyon score of 96.7 and the lowest total impact score in the table, 3.3. The test ran current consumer products on an Intel Core i3 Windows 11 machine with 8 GB RAM and an SSD.
That result is useful, but it isn't a warranty for every laptop and workload. The report says its findings indicate the impact of real-time components in those specific tests and encourages users to try the software on their own PCs. It measured file copying, archiving, app installation and launch, downloads, browsing and an Office benchmark—not every game library, developer tree, cloud-sync folder or aging hard disk.
AV-TEST's March–April 2026 result also gave McAfee Total Protection 1.36 a 6/6 performance score on Windows 11. Its task-level numbers still varied by machine class and activity. A clean default installation can therefore test well while one user's damaged install, low-memory PC or file workload performs badly.
A May 2026 r/antivirus discussion of that result captured the perception gap: the original poster was surprised because of McAfee's historical reputation. That thread is evidence of user sentiment, not a competing benchmark. Our job is to measure the local problem rather than choose the lab or the complaint by instinct.
Take a ten-minute baseline before changing settings
Save work and restart Windows normally. After sign-in, don't open a browser, game launcher, cloud drive or large project. Give Windows and McAfee ten minutes to finish startup tasks, then open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and sort the Processes page by CPU, Memory and Disk in turn.
Record the top McAfee entry, the total resource percentage and what McAfee says it's doing. Take three readings about a minute apart. One screenshot taken the instant Task Manager opens can catch a transient spike and turn a normal update into a false diagnosis.
Repeat the same observation during the activity that feels slow. If the complaint occurs during gaming, start the same game; if it occurs while unpacking a download, use one trusted sample archive. Change only one variable so the result is comparable.

Keep the numbers descriptive, not absolute. “McAfee Scanner Service stayed near the top for ten idle minutes and no scan or update was shown” is stronger evidence than “McAfee used too much CPU.”
CPU, memory and disk percentages describe different bottlenecks
CPU use means the processor is busy executing work. Memory use is the amount of RAM held or committed, but it becomes a responsiveness problem mainly when total pressure forces paging. Disk use in Task Manager is usually active time, not storage capacity and not transfer speed.
A scanner can create all three symptoms in sequence. It reads files from disk, holds scanning data in memory and processes file contents on the CPU. Fixing the wrong resource wastes time: clearing temporary files doesn't repair a CPU loop, and buying RAM doesn't repair a drive stuck at 100% active time because it's failing.
Open the Performance page in Task Manager for context. CPU speed and utilization, memory in use and committed, and each disk's active time and transfer rate tell a fuller story than the Processes column alone.
Recognize normal McAfee resource bursts
Startup, an engine update, new definitions, a quick scan and the first access to a large batch of files can all create brief load. A full scan is explicitly resource-intensive. Microsoft's current scan troubleshooting notes that scanning uses processor and memory and that other running programs can create a resource traffic jam.
Normal doesn't mean invisible. Fans may rise, disk active time may jump and a low-core CPU can be heavily occupied. The healthy pattern is a visible task, forward progress and a return toward the recorded idle baseline after the task completes.
Updates can also trigger a short follow-up scan or component restart. Allow the activity to finish once before judging it. Repeated bursts on a schedule are different from one burst that never settles.
Persistent idle load is the symptom that deserves repair
Call the problem persistent only after startup has settled, McAfee shows no active scan or update, and the load repeats across several readings. Confirm another app isn't constantly generating files for McAfee to inspect. A backup client, cloud sync, browser download, game patcher or development watcher can make real-time scanning busy while the desktop looks idle.
Restart and reproduce the quiet baseline once more. If the same McAfee process stays high, note whether CPU, memory or disk is dominant. Then install updates, check for a second antivirus and use repair before reaching for exclusions or removal.
Don't force-end the service to prove it's responsible. Stopping the security layer changes the system, can leave protection unavailable and doesn't identify why the service was busy.
Fix McAfee Scanner Service high CPU
Start by matching the spike to an activity. If a full scan is running and advancing, cancel it through the McAfee interface only when it's disrupting urgent work, then reschedule the scan for an idle period. If no scan is shown, watch whether another program is creating, compiling, extracting or synchronizing files.
Install McAfee and Windows updates and restart. Check Windows Security to confirm a single active antivirus provider. Two real-time scanners can inspect each other's operations and create a loop that looks like one product's CPU defect; Microsoft warns against running two antimalware products together in its consumer antivirus provider guidance.

Diagnose high McAfee memory use without chasing one number
There's no single correct McAfee RAM figure. A current product can run several components, cache data and release memory when another app needs it. Windows also uses available RAM for caching, so a high total percentage isn't automatically a leak.
Look at Task Manager's Memory page: total in use, available memory and committed memory matter more than one process's working set. Responsiveness, growing commit use and sustained disk paging are stronger signs of pressure. Watch whether the McAfee process keeps growing for ten idle minutes or falls after a scan or update.
A May 2026 r/McAfee post reported two framework processes sometimes reaching about 1.6 GB. That's a useful example of what a user may notice, but it doesn't establish a normal limit or a failure rate. Product build, enabled modules and total RAM weren't controlled like a lab test.
Close unrelated memory-heavy apps for one clean baseline, update, restart and repair if growth persists. Don't download a “RAM cleaner”; forcing cached memory out can make Windows do more disk work without fixing the cause.
Diagnose McAfee at 100% disk active time
Task Manager's 100% disk reading means the drive is busy for the entire sample, not that the drive is full. A mechanical hard disk can reach 100% active time while moving relatively little data because many small-file requests require physical seeks. An SSD can also saturate under queueing, but the transfer pattern and latency differ.
Open Task Manager's Performance → Disk view and note active time, read/write speed and response time. Check which McAfee activity is running and whether Windows Update, Search indexing, cloud sync, backup or decompression is hitting the same drive. Let one job finish and repeat the same observation.
Use Windows Security's Device performance & health report to check storage and software warnings. Very low free space makes updates, quarantine and paging harder; Microsoft's scan guidance also identifies free space and large archives as relevant to long scans.
If disk stays saturated outside McAfee activity or file operations fail in other apps, investigate storage health before blaming the scanner. Back up important data first. Reinstalling antivirus can't repair a failing drive.
Reduce the disruption from a legitimate full scan
A full scan reads much more data than routine real-time protection, so schedule it when the PC is plugged in and not needed for gaming, editing, backup or a large update. Close heavy apps, restart once and start the scan before reopening them. Microsoft recommends the same quiet-workload principle for long malware scans.
Watch progress rather than trying to cap a protected service through Task Manager. If McAfee offers a background or schedule control in the current build, use the app's supported control. Menu names differ across McAfee+, Total Protection, LiveSafe and provider bundles, so this guide doesn't invent one universal path.
If a full scan repeatedly stalls on the same path, use the not-working/scan guide and capture the file. If it finishes but the system remains busy afterward, continue with the persistent-idle repair path.
Archives, game libraries, developer trees and cloud sync create workload collisions
File extraction is a classic collision: the archiver creates thousands of files while real-time protection opens them for inspection and a cloud client may immediately upload them. A package manager or compiler can do the same in a dependency or build directory. The result can look like McAfee alone owns the CPU or disk because its scanner is the visible reader.
Pause the trusted cloud-sync or backup job, finish the local operation and repeat the measurement. Don't diagnose using an untrusted download or disable real-time protection around unknown files. If the workload is a game update, let the launcher complete and compare the ten-minute after-state.
A July 2026 r/techsupport case described game configuration writes working only after exclusions were added. That's a current example of file-operation interaction, not proof that every game folder should be excluded. Narrow reproduction and trust of the path matter.
Remove a second real-time antivirus before tuning McAfee
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and look for old security suites and trials. Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection for the active provider. A separate browser extension such as WebAdvisor isn't another full antivirus; our WebAdvisor review explains that distinction.
Choose one real-time provider, remove the other through its supported uninstaller and restart. Don't leave both installed but “temporarily disabled”; drivers and services can remain active. A portable second-opinion scanner is different only when it doesn't install a competing real-time engine.
After restart, repeat the same baseline. If McAfee load falls, the conflict was material. If it does not, continue without adding a third security product.
Check free space, drive type and Windows device health
McAfee's current consumer system requirements list minimum hardware and supported operating systems, but a minimum doesn't guarantee comfortable multitasking. At the July 30 check, common Windows consumer products listed 2 GB RAM, 1.3 GB free drive space and a 1 GHz processor. Modern Windows, browsers and games need much more practical headroom.
Use Microsoft's supported drive-space tools rather than a random registry cleaner. Keep additional space for Windows Update, paging, temporary extraction and quarantine. Confirm whether the system drive is an HDD or SSD because 100% active time behaves very differently on each.
Install pending Windows updates and review Device performance & health. If the PC also freezes while copying files with McAfee removed or inactive, check the drive, drivers, cooling and hardware rather than treating the antivirus as the only suspect.
Update McAfee and restart under controlled conditions
Open McAfee directly and request an update if the build exposes that control. Install Windows updates, save work and restart. Then wait through the same ten-minute idle period before opening other apps.
Don't compare pre-restart load during an update with post-restart idle load. Record whether the McAfee process, dominant resource and visible activity changed. A repairable component loop often disappears after the update/restart cycle; a workload collision returns only when the triggering activity resumes.
If updates fail rather than merely consume resources, switch to the update troubleshooting branch. Repeating a failed update while measuring performance combines two problems and obscures both.
Use an exclusion only as a narrow, reversible diagnostic test
An exclusion tells the antivirus not to inspect a path or item, so it trades protection for performance. Never exclude the Windows folder, Downloads, the whole user profile, a browser cache, an entire game library of untrusted mods or a full drive. Don't copy exclusions from an enterprise server guide into a home PC.
A defensible diagnostic test has four properties: the path is trusted, narrow, locally controlled and reliably reproduces the load. Record the baseline, add the smallest path through the current McAfee interface, repeat once, then remove the exclusion. If the load changes, redesign the workflow before making any permanent exception.
For a developer build-output folder, keep source downloads and dependencies scanned while considering only disposable generated output. For a game, use the vendor's signed path and treat mods, saves and community downloads separately. If the path stores email, downloads or synchronized files from other people, it isn't a good exclusion candidate.
Repair McAfee when persistent load survives the clean baseline

After repair, verify Windows Security sees McAfee as the active provider, request one update and repeat the idle baseline. Then reproduce the workload once. A repair counts as successful only when the original CPU, memory or disk pattern changes and protection remains active.
If the repair tool reports no issue and the same persistent idle load remains, save the evidence and prepare for a clean reinstall or support case. Don't stack optimizer utilities on top of the unresolved scanner.
Clean reinstall is the final software repair step
Verify the McAfee account and subscription before removing anything. Uninstall through Windows, restart and confirm Microsoft Defender becomes active. Reinstall from the correct McAfee account, ISP or OEM route using the safe setup guide. Update, restart and collect the same ten-minute baseline before enabling optional modules or restoring every prior setting.
If a clean default installation immediately reproduces the idle load, contact support with the measurements or make a measured product change. Reinstalling repeatedly isn't further diagnosis.
Make a fair before-and-after comparison before replacing McAfee
Compare the same machine, power mode, idle period and workload. A McAfee full scan versus Microsoft Defender sitting idle proves nothing. Record boot-settle time, idle CPU, total memory pressure, disk active time and one repeatable task under each single active provider.
The April 2026 lab data is useful context because it shows a clean McAfee installation can be lightweight in standardized work. Fan noise, heat and battery drain need the same baseline
High CPU raises heat and fan speed; sustained disk work and paging also consume power. Test while plugged in first so a power-saving policy doesn't distort the comparison. Then repeat a short battery observation with the same workload.
Check that vents are clear and the laptop is on a hard surface. Thermal throttling can make a modest scan feel severe because the CPU slows itself while the fan remains loud. Cleaning software can't remove dust or repair a failing fan.

What changes when McAfee uses resources on a Mac
Use Activity Monitor rather than Windows Task Manager and don't apply Windows services, MCPR or Defender instructions. Observe CPU, Memory Pressure and Disk activity after a restart and during the exact scan or file workload. The same short-burst-versus-persistent principle still applies.
Confirm the Mac meets the current McAfee requirement and that system extensions and permissions are correctly approved. A partial permission state can produce repeated work or failed protection, but the fix must follow McAfee's current macOS support route.
If a clean reinstall is required, use the Mac-specific uninstaller. Dragging only the visible app to Trash can leave components and makes a before-and-after comparison unreliable.
ISP bundles, OEM trials and managed Trellix products are different
Consumer McAfee+ and Total Protection instructions don't automatically apply to enterprise Endpoint Security, Trellix or a work-managed PC. Managed products can have scheduled tasks, exclusions and policies controlled by an administrator. Stop if the interface says the setting is managed.
An ISP or computer-maker bundle may use a provider-specific installer and support channel. Record the exact product name before repairing or reinstalling. A retail installer can create a second entitlement without solving the original performance problem.

Capture evidence that McAfee support can act on
Record the McAfee product and version, Windows edition and build, CPU model, installed RAM, drive type, free space and active antivirus provider. Add the exact McAfee process name as Task Manager displays it, but don't upload executables or assume a familiar name proves the path is genuine.
Include three idle readings, three workload readings, the visible McAfee activity, elapsed time and whether usage returned to baseline. For disk problems, add active time, transfer rate, response time and the concurrent file operation. For memory, include total available and committed memory rather than one working-set number.
List updates, conflict removal, repair and clean reinstall only if completed. Redact account email, device IDs and private file paths before posting publicly. A concise timeline is more valuable than an optimizer log from an unrelated tool.
Verify the repair across idle, scan and normal work
Restart, wait ten minutes and collect the same three idle readings. Confirm Windows Security recognizes McAfee and Real-Time Scanning is active. Then run a quick scan or repeat the trusted workload that previously caused the problem.
After it finishes, wait another ten minutes and compare with the original baseline. The fix is credible when the system returns toward baseline, the task completes, and protection remains enabled after a second restart. A lower graph achieved by disabling scanning isn't a repair.
Keep the results for a day in case the problem follows a schedule. If the spike returns at the same time, check scheduled scan, backup, sync and update activity before changing more settings.
Prevent another performance collision without weakening protection
Keep Windows and McAfee updated, leave practical free disk space and schedule full scans away from backups, game updates and large builds. Avoid running two real-time antivirus products or several cleanup utilities. Restart after security-component updates instead of leaving the PC pending indefinitely.
For repeatable trusted workloads, change timing and folder design before considering an exclusion. Keep untrusted downloads, dependencies, mods, email and synchronized external content inside scanned paths. Document any permanent exception so it doesn't silently expand.

Bottom line: persistent idle load matters more than a peak
A high number during an update or full scan can be real and still be expected. The diagnosis begins when the load persists after the activity and returns after a controlled restart. Separate CPU work, memory pressure and disk active time before deciding what to repair.
Current independent testing shows McAfee can run with low standardized impact, so a slow local PC deserves investigation rather than a slogan. Measure the baseline, remove workload conflicts, update, repair and cross the clean-reinstall gate only when the evidence supports it. Keep one real-time provider active throughout.

The service can use substantial CPU while McAfee is scanning, updating or inspecting files that another app is creating or unpacking. Watch the active McAfee task and whether usage falls when it finishes. If the process remains high after a restart and a ten-minute idle baseline, update Windows and McAfee, remove any second real-time antivirus, and use the official repair path.
Is 100% CPU during a McAfee full scan normal?
A full scan is designed to use available processing capacity, so a short period of very high CPU can occur, especially on a low-core processor. The more useful questions are whether the PC remains responsive, whether the scan advances, and whether CPU falls afterward. Persistent 100% use at idle or after the scan ends isn't something to dismiss.
How much memory should McAfee use?
There's no universal normal number because the product build, enabled features, device RAM, workload and Windows caching all differ. Why does McAfee make the disk show 100% usage?
Task Manager's disk percentage is active time, not the percentage of storage capacity used. A slower HDD can reach 100% active time at modest transfer rates while McAfee scans many small files. Can I end McAfee Scanner Service in Task Manager?
Don't use force-ending a protected security service as the fix. It can leave the PC unprotected, the service may restart, and the action removes evidence about the task creating the load. Should I add an exclusion to reduce McAfee CPU usage?
