McAfee Pricing and Renewal Costs: Which Plan Is Worth It?
McAfee's first-year cards look simple. The real decision starts when you separate devices from people, security from identity services, and today's discount from the next charge.
Quick answer: For one person, Essential is the rational security-first plan for up to five devices, while Premium earns its extra cost only when you need more household devices and will use the privacy scans. Advanced and Ultimate are identity-service purchases, not stronger antivirus engines. On the direct US pages checked July 30, 2026, first-term prices ranged from $29.99 for Basic to $249.99 for Ultimate Family, and the displayed renewal references were substantially higher. Budget from the two-term total, then verify the exact upcoming charge in My Account.
Current McAfee prices: the first year is only half the quote
We captured three direct US McAfee pages on July 30, 2026: Total Protection, McAfee+ Individual and McAfee+ Family. The direct storefront separated new-customer first-term prices from much higher crossed-out figures. McAfee's own offer terms say that, unless stated otherwise, the displayed saving compares the introductory amount with the renewal subscription price.
That still doesn't make the crossed-out number a lifetime guarantee. The legal terms say renewal uses the price in effect when the subscription renews and that pricing can change with advance notice. We therefore call the larger figure a displayed renewal reference. It's the responsible budget today, while the account-specific notice and My Account remain the evidence for the next actual charge.
| Plan | People / devices | First term observed | Displayed renewal reference | Two-term illustration | Effective monthly cost over 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 1 user / 1 device | $29.99 | $89.99 | $119.98 | $5.00 |
| Essential | 1 user / 5 devices | $39.99 | $119.99 | $159.98 | $6.67 |
| Premium Individual | 1 user / personal household devices | $49.99 | $149.99 | $199.98 | $8.33 |
| Advanced Individual | 1 user / personal household devices | $89.99 | $199.99 | $289.98 | $12.08 |
| Ultimate Individual | 1 user / personal household devices | $199.99 | $279.99 | $479.98 | $20.00 |
| Premium Family | Up to 2 adults + 4 children / household devices | $69.99 | $169.99 | $239.98 | $10.00 |
| Advanced Family | Up to 2 adults + 4 children / household devices | $119.99 | $269.99 | $389.98 | $16.25 |
| Ultimate Family | Up to 2 adults + 4 children / household devices | $249.99 | $424.99 | $674.98 | $28.12 |
The two-term column is simple arithmetic: the captured first term plus the captured reference, divided by 24 for the monthly illustration. It excludes tax and assumes the displayed reference doesn't change, which McAfee doesn't promise. Its value is comparative. A $29.99 Basic card looks cheaper than a $39.99 Essential card, but the two-term difference is only $40 while Essential expands from one device to five.
Old and even current reviews disagree because they captured different campaigns, markets and product names. A July 2026 Cloudwards price table matches several current direct figures, while other pages still show $84.99 for Basic or retired Plus labels. Treat those as dated receipts, not evidence that your cart is wrong. Our table wins or loses on the observation date and the direct source, not on pretending one global McAfee price exists.
The short answer: choose by job, not by the red discount
Basic is for one device and very little else. Essential is the practical security-first tier for one person with up to five supported devices. Premium Individual is the first sensible move for a one-person household with more hardware, but its privacy-cleanup tools are scans and guidance rather than the full removal service advertised above it.
Advanced is the point where McAfee becomes an identity-recovery purchase: full personal-data and account removal, eligible identity coverage, restoration help, transaction monitoring and one-bureau credit monitoring. Ultimate adds the broadest financial and three-bureau monitoring. Neither tier documents a stronger malware-detection engine. If you only want antivirus, the extra bill is buying the wrong category.
Family plans are about covered people, parental controls and identity services across an enrolled household. Premium Family can make sense before Advanced Individual when two adults and children need separate profiles. Buying Family only because it says “all devices” misses the actual unit of value.
The protection verdict is deliberately elsewhere. Our McAfee review checks current lab evidence, performance and product limitations. This page asks a narrower question: after the acquisition discount disappears, which services would you still pay to keep?
What every paid McAfee plan buys—and what a higher tier doesn't
The current product cards put the same core security story across the range: antivirus, Scam Detector, web protection, Secure VPN and identity monitoring alerts. Basic limits that bundle to one device; Essential expands it to five. Premium and the identity tiers add privacy, cleanup, credit, financial and recovery services around the same named antivirus foundation.
That distinction prevents a common pricing mistake. “Ultimate” sounds like the version that detects more malware, but McAfee doesn't publish a separate Ultimate antivirus engine or an Ultimate-only independent lab result. AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives evaluate the protection product, not eight different retail cards. Paying more can improve the household service package without changing the core detector.
Operating-system parity is another trap. A plan can allow Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Chromebook installations while offering different controls on each platform. Apple's rules, ChromeOS architecture and mobile permissions prevent a desktop-identical feature set. Check the official McAfee system requirements for supported versions, then price the features that work on the devices you own.
The honest baseline may also be free. A maintained Windows 11 PC already has Microsoft Defender; our Defender review explains its current strengths and gaps. Paid McAfee needs to justify itself through cross-platform management, web and scam layers, VPN convenience, support or identity services—not simply through the word “premium.”
McAfee Basic vs Essential: $40 separates one device from five over two terms
Basic displayed $29.99 for the first term and a $89.99 renewal reference. Essential displayed $39.99 and $119.99. On the two-term illustration, Basic totals $119.98 and Essential $159.98. That $40 difference buys four additional device slots and avoids having to decide which computer or phone remains outside the paid suite.
Basic is defensible for one computer when the bundled VPN, web protection and password workflow replace tools you'd otherwise buy. Its weak point is renewal efficiency. Paying a displayed $89.99 reference for one device is hard to defend when Essential's five-device reference is $30 higher and several competitors sell multi-device security in the same range.
Essential is our security-first default for a one-person household. Five slots are enough for a laptop, desktop, phone, tablet and spare or partner device, although the subscription still describes one user rather than six separate family identities. If you need only one protected Windows PC and none of the bundle, compare the long-term cost with the choices in our free antivirus guide before paying for convenience you won't use.
The Basic-versus-Essential decision should be made from occupied devices, not theoretical capacity. List the hardware that will actually run McAfee, remove work-managed systems and unsupported old devices, then divide the two-term cost by that number. Five empty slots don't create value, but one missing phone can undermine the simplicity you thought you bought.
Individual vs Family: devices are unlimited, enrolled people aren't
McAfee's current Family page defines the household as up to two adults and four children under 18. Premium Family displayed $69.99 for the first term and $169.99 as the renewal reference; Advanced Family showed $119.99/$269.99; Ultimate Family showed $249.99/$424.99. Those aren't simply bigger individual plans. They add parental controls and distribute supported identity services across a family structure.
Premium Family is the practical first look for two adults with children who need device security and parental controls. Advanced Family adds the full cleanup, restoration and one-bureau identity layer for eligible adults. Ultimate Family extends the highest monitoring tier, but don't assume every credit and financial feature applies identically to a child. The official comparison uses adult-specific wording in several benefits.
A couple without children can still value separate adult identities, but the math must beat two individual subscriptions or a competitor family bundle. One Premium Family term at the displayed renewal reference was $169.99; two Premium Individual references would total $299.98. That gap is meaningful if both adults are genuinely covered as separate people. It isn't evidence that the family tier has a stronger antivirus.
Count people first, devices second. If one adult owns eight devices, Premium Individual fits. If two adults and three children own the same eight devices, Family fits the human structure. If the main requirement is only five shared devices and no parental or identity services, Essential can remain the cheaper answer despite the word “family” never appearing on the card.
What “unlimited devices” means in McAfee's own terms
McAfee's offer terms don't grant an unlimited commercial deployment. Plans covering “all” devices are limited to supported devices that you own, for personal non-commercial use, and are subject to a fair-use policy. A Premium login isn't a license for a small office, extended family in unrelated homes or every computer you occasionally repair.
The word also says nothing about feature parity. A Chromebook may receive web and scam protection while a Windows PC receives deeper local scanning and firewall controls. An iPhone can't run a traditional full-system antivirus scan. The plan can cover both without delivering the same technical stack.
There's a second limit: people. Premium Individual names one user even when the device card says all devices. Family names up to six members. Identity monitoring, credit services, restoration and insurance are attached to enrolled eligible people and policy conditions, not automatically multiplied by every laptop installation.
If device onboarding fails, use McAfee support rather than inventing a fair-use threshold. The public terms don't promise a specific numerical ceiling beyond the household language. That uncertainty is a reason to keep the order record and test the device fleet during the initial refund window.
McAfee renewal price and billing timeline: the charge can arrive before expiry
The current McAfee legal and refund terms say a direct paid subscription renews automatically unless the customer opts out. McAfee says it emails an advance notice and can charge the saved payment method within 30 days before the subscription is due to end. The amount is the renewal price in effect at that time, which may differ from the amount originally paid.
That timing changes the practical cancellation deadline. Waiting until the date printed as “expires” can be too late because the renewal may already have been billed. McAfee specifically advises turning off auto-renewal more than 30 days before the term ends if you want to avoid the next charge. We would set a reminder 45 days before expiry, then check again after saving the setting.
For eligible annual consumer products bought directly, a new purchase generally has a 30-day full-refund request window and an annual auto-renewal has a 60-day window after the charge. Monthly products, app stores, retailers, countries and one-time support services can differ. A refund policy isn't permission to ignore the notice; it's the fallback when the charge no longer matches the decision.
Our sitewide antivirus renewal-price report shows why the second term belongs in every comparison. McAfee isn't unique in using introductory acquisition pricing, but its high-tier individual and family spread makes the omission especially expensive.
Turning off auto-renewal can remove benefits, so record the tradeoff
McAfee ties some qualifying benefits to automatic renewal. The offer terms name the Virus Protection Pledge: if McAfee can't remove a virus from a supported device under the program conditions, it may refund the current-term subscription payment. Other free benefits can vary by product and location, and eligibility is shown in My Account.
Turning off renewal can therefore end eligibility for those extras. That doesn't mean auto-renewal is always the better financial decision. A benefit has value only when you qualify, understand its limits and would choose the renewal price to keep it. Don't leave a $200 charge active because a generic badge sounds like unlimited insurance.
Before changing the setting, make a two-column note: exact benefit lost and exact renewal amount avoided. Read the conditions from the official product account rather than a review screenshot. If the pledge matters, keep backups anyway; the terms explicitly separate the subscription refund from damage or data loss caused by a virus.
This is also why “cancel immediately after purchase” isn't universal advice. A cautious buyer can keep auto-renewal during the trial or test period, verify the included benefits, then decide before the 30-day advance charge window. The important part is an intentional setting and a saved reminder, not whether the toggle is always on or always off.
Is McAfee free? There's a trial, not a permanent full desktop suite
The current McAfee free antivirus page promotes a 30-day Total Protection trial for up to five devices. It includes the paid-suite experience during the trial; it isn't a permanent free desktop antivirus. McAfee also offers limited free utilities and WebAdvisor, but those don't turn into a full real-time subscription without payment.
The direct trial terms observed July 30 said the trial converts to a $39.99 first term and later renews at a price then shown as $109.99 per year. McAfee also said the renewal charge occurs seven days before that later renewal and tells trial users to change the setting before the free period ends. Those numbers and dates are campaign-specific. Capture the signup disclosure you actually accept.
A 30-day trial is useful for checking installation, notifications, VPN reliability, mobile-device onboarding and whether the account recognizes every device. It isn't enough time to prove that identity restoration or data removal will perform perfectly during a future incident. Test what can be tested and refuse to assign untested services their full marketing value.
If the trial isn't wanted, Microsoft Defender or another permanent free product is the cleaner path than repeatedly starting promotional trials. Our free antivirus comparison separates real-time free suites from scanners and short-term offers.
How to check your exact McAfee renewal charge before it's billed
Open McAfee My Account directly from a typed or bookmarked mcafee.com address. Don't use a phone number or account link from an unexpected renewal email. Sign in with the purchase email, then identify the active subscription rather than assuming the product name in the desktop app matches the billing record.
- Confirm the merchant and region. A direct McAfee order, Apple subscription, Google Play subscription and retail-card purchase can have different billing owners and currencies.
- Record the exact product. Write down Basic, Essential, Premium, Advanced, Ultimate or LiveSafe, plus Individual or Family. Similar names don't guarantee the same benefits.
- Check the people and devices. Confirm the user/member entitlement and installed device count. Remove old devices only after understanding whether that changes seats or merely deactivates an endpoint.
- Read the next payment date and amount. The account and advance email are more relevant than a public crossed-out price because McAfee uses the price in effect at renewal.
- Verify auto-renewal and dependent benefits. Save a screenshot or PDF after changing the setting, and keep the confirmation email.
- Set a reminder 45 days before expiry. That sits ahead of McAfee's stated within-30-days billing window and leaves time to compare alternatives or contact support.
If the subscription is missing, search other email addresses and the original order receipt before concluding the charge is fraudulent. A June 2026 r/mcafee billing thread describes a poster who could see recurring card charges but no longer knew the account. That anecdote isn't proof of a McAfee error; it demonstrates why account email, merchant descriptor and card statement must be reconciled early.
For a charge already made, use McAfee's official support and refund paths and keep the case number. The detailed cancellation and refund article in this cluster will handle merchant-specific steps separately, so this pricing page doesn't turn a purchase decision into a support manual.
Retail keys, preinstalled trials and optional add-ons can create a second price story
A code from a retailer can be cheaper than the direct storefront, but it can also have a different term, activation flow, region lock and renewal enrollment. The official McAfee retail-card activation page is the correct starting point. Record the seller, code term and whether activation creates or updates a direct McAfee subscription.
Preinstalled McAfee on a new PC is another route. It may be an OEM trial, a LiveSafe entitlement or a retailer bundle rather than the public plan in our table. Read the account's exact product and expiry. The existing McAfee LiveSafe guide explains when that legacy name overlaps with current protection and when switching plans is cleaner.
Optional utilities should remain separate line items. A June 2026 r/antivirus post from Australia describes a LiveSafe renewal followed by a separate PC Optimizer purchase. It's one person's account, not a general price rule, but the budgeting lesson is solid: an antivirus renewal and an optimizer upsell are different decisions. McAfee has a separate PC Optimizer product page, so don't assume every prompt is already included.
Tax and currency finish the explanation. Our table is US/USD before tax. Australian, UK, EU and retailer pages can show materially different amounts, refund rights and identity features. Never convert our dollar table and call the result a local quote.
Real McAfee renewal or fake invoice? Verify the charge, not the logo
McAfee is a common name in callback-refund scams. An unsolicited message claims that a large subscription renewed and tells the recipient to call an unfamiliar number. The goal may be card details, credentials, a remote-access session or a fake refund. A realistic logo and a plausible dollar amount don't prove that McAfee sent it.
A 2026 r/mcafee thread about fake renewal emails includes reports of messages demanding calls about $300–$500 charges and attempts to obtain remote access. Community reports are anecdotal, but the safe workflow doesn't depend on believing any poster: ignore the embedded number, check the card statement, type mcafee.com yourself and inspect My Account.
A real charge should have a matching merchant record and subscription. A fake invoice may have no card transaction at all. If money actually left the account but My Account shows nothing, contact the card issuer through the number on the card and McAfee through its official site. Don't install remote-support software because the invoice sender instructs you to.
This page keeps the warning short because fake pop-ups, browser notifications and refund scams are a separate troubleshooting intent. The cluster's dedicated scam-recovery guide will cover browser permissions, notification cleanup and evidence preservation without diluting the plan comparison.
Is McAfee worth the renewal price?
Essential is easiest to defend at renewal when five devices are active and the household uses the web, scam and VPN layers. Premium Individual works for a one-person device-heavy home. Advanced and Ultimate can be worth their higher bill when the subscriber is eligible, completes enrollment and would otherwise pay for cleanup, restoration, credit and financial monitoring. Unused coverage isn't savings.
Basic is the awkward renewal. The captured $89.99 reference protects one device, while Essential's $119.99 reference protects five. A one-PC buyer should compare that price with Defender and paid competitors. The McAfee versus Avast comparison adds a free-versus-bundle view, while McAfee versus Norton compares two renewal-heavy suites.
Family value depends on enrolled people. Premium Family can undercut two individual Premium renewals and add parental controls. Ultimate Family's $674.98 two-term illustration is a serious identity-protection budget, so compare policy details and dedicated services rather than treating the antivirus as the whole purchase.
Our verdict is conditional, not vague: buy the lowest tier that solves the stated job, budget from the displayed renewal reference, and keep an account reminder ahead of the charge window. If the renewal price is no longer justified, compare alternatives before protection expires rather than renewing from inertia. Our editorial disclosure explains how the site handles affiliate relationships, and how we test separates sourced terms from hands-on product evidence.
McAfee pricing and renewal FAQ
How much does McAfee cost in 2026?
On the direct US pages checked July 30, 2026, first-term prices were $29.99 for Basic, $39.99 for Essential, $49.99 for Premium Individual, $89.99 for Advanced Individual and $199.99 for Ultimate Individual. Family first-term prices were $69.99, $119.99 and $249.99. These are dated new-customer offers before tax, not universal or permanent prices.
How much does McAfee renew for?
The same July 30 US pages displayed reference amounts of $89.99 for Basic, $119.99 for Essential, $149.99 for Premium Individual, $199.99 for Advanced Individual and $279.99 for Ultimate Individual. Family references were $169.99, $269.99 and $424.99. McAfee's terms say the actual charge is the renewal price in effect at that time, so My Account and the advance notice are authoritative.
Which McAfee plan is best for most people?
Essential is the cleanest security-first choice for one user with up to five devices. Premium Individual is more practical for one person with a large household device fleet and a genuine use for privacy scans. Advanced and Ultimate make sense only when their eligible cleanup, restoration, credit and financial-monitoring services replace products you'd otherwise buy.
Does McAfee have a permanent free antivirus?
McAfee doesn't currently offer a permanent full desktop antivirus suite. It promotes a 30-day Total Protection trial for up to five devices and also offers limited free tools such as WebAdvisor. The trial converts to a paid term under the signup disclosure unless it's cancelled before the charge.
What does unlimited devices mean on McAfee plans?
McAfee's offer terms limit all-device plans to supported personal household devices that you own, for non-commercial use and subject to fair use. It isn't an unlimited business license or permission to cover unrelated households. Features also differ by operating system even when the installation is allowed.
When does McAfee charge for auto-renewal?
McAfee's current US terms say the payment method can be charged within 30 days before the subscription expires. The company says it emails an advance notice and uses the renewal price in effect at the time. If you don't want the charge, McAfee instructs customers to disable auto-renewal more than 30 days before expiry.
Can I get a refund after McAfee auto-renews?
For eligible annual consumer subscriptions bought directly from McAfee, the current policy provides a full-refund request window of 60 days after an automatic-renewal charge. New annual purchases generally have a 30-day window. Retailers, app stores, monthly products, countries and service add-ons can follow different rules, so use the merchant that actually charged you.
Is McAfee Ultimate better at detecting malware?
McAfee doesn't document a different antivirus engine for Ultimate. The higher price buys broader identity, credit, financial-monitoring, recovery and coverage services where eligible. The protection evidence belongs in the McAfee review; choose Ultimate only if those adjacent services justify its long-term price.
