The app solves a real problem: most consumer scams are conversations and decisions, not files waiting for a traditional antivirus scan. Its manual Scam Check accepts several useful forms of evidence, while background controls can identify suspicious language, websites, texts, calls and possible face swapping. Trend Micro's current product page presents those capabilities as an all-in-one anti-scam layer. We would call it a second opinion with automation, not an oracle.

The best part is the pause it creates. A warning can interrupt urgency and expose the exact phrases, link patterns or caller signals that deserve checking. The weak point is inherent to the category: a novel scam on a legitimate platform, a compromised real account or a patient romance and investment fraud can look harmless to an automated classifier. The app earns a place when its user understands that boundary and is comfortable with the permissions needed by the selected features.

What ScamCheck is—and what it isn't

ScamCheck is a separate mobile app for Android and iOS. Older documentation and store reviews may call it Trend Micro Check; the current SMS Filter documentation confirms the naming transition. It can inspect content you submit manually and, after you enable specific controls, monitor selected signals in the background. Trend Micro's current release overview documents Scam Radar, Family Circle and redeem-code access. That makes it closer to a scam-analysis assistant than a conventional virus scanner.

It isn't the desktop Web Threat Protection Toolbar, the Windows Pay Guard browser or Trend Micro Mobile Security. It can't reverse a transfer, authenticate a caller's identity, guarantee that a job or investment is genuine, or certify a link forever. Our main Trend Micro review evaluates the antivirus suite and its laboratory record separately. None of those antivirus scores are evidence that ScamCheck catches a particular message, relationship or deepfake.

ScamCheck features at a glance

The current feature and installation guide lists Scam Check, Scam Radar, AI Video Scan, SMS Filter, Call Block, Web Guard, Family Circle and an Android-only Device Security Scan. The separate scam-types guide covers phishing and smishing, social engineering, investment and crypto, loan, romance, job, delivery and AI/deepfake scams. Those categories describe intended coverage, not guaranteed detection of every case. The app build, operating system, subscription and regional data source decide what appears.

Is ScamCheck free, and what does paid add?

The current Google Play listing describes a 30-day trial of premium features, no automatic charge unless the user chooses a subscription, and limited free use after the trial. It separates an Individual plan from a Family plan, with Family Circle and multi-device protection associated with the family tier. Apple likewise lists a free download with several in-app purchases. Those store screens are the transaction truth at checkout.

We're deliberately not publishing one universal dollar figure. The US Apple listing showed multiple monthly and annual in-app purchases when checked, which can represent different tiers or legacy/current offers. Country, store, tax, promotion, account and renewal date can change the final amount. Open the plan comparison inside the current app, read the renewal interval and cancellation seller, and capture the final confirmation before paying. ScamCheck on iPhone versus Android

Both platforms get the core manual check, but Apple and Google expose messages, calls, notifications and browsing through different security models. Android's current store page explicitly describes accessibility access for browser URL protection, contact and call-log access for caller functions, notification access and SMS permissions. Recent release notes say flexible SMS protection may work with Read SMS permission instead of always making ScamCheck the default messaging app. The prompt in the installed current build is more authoritative than an old tutorial.

On iPhone, call and message filtering use Apple's approved extension frameworks, while web protection may create a VPN configuration for URL filtering. That doesn't automatically mean all traffic is tunneled through a location-changing privacy VPN. Device Security Scan is documented as Android-only. Store compatibility can also diverge: the live US Apple listing and regional Trend Micro sales pages may show different minimum OS versions, so check the actual store page on the phone that will run it.

Install and activate ScamCheck without following an imitation

Start at the verified Apple App Store or Google Play listing linked from Trend Micro's current Help Center. On Android, the package ID in the current official listing is com.trendmicro.fraudbuster; on iOS, the store page identifies Trend Micro Incorporated as the developer. Avoid sponsored download pages, QR codes in unsolicited messages and “support” links supplied by the person whose claim you're trying to verify.

Open the app and choose the route that matches your entitlement: sign in to the Trend Micro account, accept a known Family Circle invitation, use eligible trial access or redeem a partner code. The current activation guide distinguishes online serial/account activation, in-app purchases and partner redeem codes. Don't enter a store receipt or activation code into a page reached through an unexpected text.

1. Verify the store listing. Check developer, app identifier, reviews date and last update.
2. Choose the correct entitlement. Sign in, trial, family invitation or partner code should match the purchase record.
3. Read the first privacy and permission screens. Don't tap through before the feature consequence is clear.
4. Enable manual checking first. Learn the result language before granting background access.
5. Add one background feature at a time. Confirm its indicator and test with benign content.
6. Record billing and family settings. Save seller, renewal date, organizer and consent decisions.

ScamCheck permissions explained before you grant them

A scam app needs visibility into the channel it promises to protect; the question is whether that visibility is proportionate and understood. Android's store disclosure connects accessibility to current browser URL checks, contacts to contact selection and caller identification, phone access to call history, notifications to alerts, and SMS access to suspicious-message detection. Google separately says its Data safety panel is based on information the developer supplies and can vary by use, region and age.

Grant a permission because you enabled a named feature, not because a setup progress bar is incomplete. If you only want to paste or upload suspicious content manually, begin without every background control. Contacts, call logs, messages and notification content are sensitive even when the app is legitimate. Review permissions after major updates, remove access for features you stopped using, and uninstall through the operating system if the product no longer earns that access.

What to submit—and what to redact before Scam Check

A useful submission preserves the suspicious claim and removes everything the classifier doesn't need. Keep the full sender domain, visible destination URL, wording of the request, claimed organization, amount and deadline. Crop unrelated conversations. Mask one-time passcodes, full account or card numbers, recovery codes, home addresses, medical or client details, children's information and faces that aren't part of the analysis.

Trend Micro says on its product page that it doesn't store content submitted or scanned by ScamCheck. That's a vendor statement worth reading alongside the applicable privacy notice and current app-store disclosure, not permission to upload an unredacted life archive. Data minimization protects you from mistakes, changed policies, screenshots stored elsewhere on the phone and accidental forwarding to a family member or support agent.

How to interpret a ScamCheck result safely

Start with the reasons, not the color. Urgency, secrecy, payment method, mismatched sender domain, a shortened link, remote-access request or sudden account change can be actionable even if the overall result is uncertain. An alert means stop the interaction and verify elsewhere. Don't argue with the sender or use a phone number, support chat or website contained in the suspicious content.

A low-risk or clean result is weaker than many readers expect. It may mean the submitted sample lacked known indicators, not that the person is honest. A scammer can use a real marketplace account, a legitimate video platform or months of ordinary conversation before introducing money. Verify the identity and action through a saved number, official app, known organization website or family code word. When the decision affects money, credentials or account recovery, require more than one independent signal.

Scam Radar is an early-warning layer, not mind reading

Trend Micro's Scam Radar guide says the feature analyzes tone and intent to surface manipulation tactics, red flags and safety tips. For background coverage, the applicable Call Block, SMS Filter and Web Guard controls need to be enabled. That can catch the shape of a scam before a malicious file or known URL appears, which is precisely where traditional antivirus has less context.

Language models and classifiers also misunderstand jokes, unusual family phrasing, legitimate urgency and new attack scripts. Read why an item was flagged and use the built-in feedback route when the classification is clearly wrong. Don't whitelist a person permanently because one message was clean, and don't accuse a legitimate contact solely because an automated signal was high. Separate the immediate safety decision from a final judgment about intent.

Use SMS Filter and Call Block with platform and region limits in view

SMS Filter can reduce the chance that a delivery lure or fake bank message lands beside ordinary conversations. On Android, the permission model has changed over time: old reviews discuss making Trend Micro Check the default SMS client, while the June 2026 Google Play notes say Read SMS permission can support filtering without that requirement in newer builds. Follow the current prompt on your device and confirm where flagged messages go; “blocked” may mean moved to a junk area rather than destroyed.

Call Block, Caller ID and reverse phone lookup depend on regional databases. The current US Google Play listing names the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy and Taiwan for certain caller features, with more regions planned. Caller ID is still vulnerable to spoofing, and a familiar number can be forged. If a bank, relative or government office makes an urgent request, end the call and reconnect through a saved or independently verified number.

Web Guard protects destinations, not the truth of a transaction

Web Guard can block known dangerous sites and scam-related ads. On Android, accessibility access may allow ScamCheck to read the current browser URL; on iOS, URL filtering may appear as a VPN configuration. These are consequential controls, so the setup screen should explain what is inspected and where the filtering profile operates. A device VPN icon created for filtering isn't evidence that the app supplies the same anonymity, server choice or traffic tunneling as Trend Micro VPN.

Reputation can miss a newly compromised legitimate domain or flag a recently created honest site. Check the full hostname and certificate, but remember that HTTPS only protects the connection to that domain. Don't follow those Windows instructions as if they changed ScamCheck's mobile Web Guard.

AI Video Scan can flag face swapping, not authenticate a caller

AI Video Scan is aimed at real-time face-swap scams during a video call. A warning is enough reason to stop any transfer, credential disclosure or remote-access session. Preserve the caller account and time, then verify the person through a channel established before the incident. A family code word is especially useful when a distressed relative appears on screen and claims they can't call normally.

The hard boundary is the false negative. Lighting, compression, a new synthesis technique or an attack that relies on voice and context rather than face swapping may evade a detector. Family Circle works best with consent and a response plan

Family Circle lets an organizer invite trusted people and receive scam-risk or incomplete-setup alerts. Trend Micro's current Family Circle guide describes invitation links or codes and shared risk summaries. Its member explanation says the organizer doesn't see private messages or personal data. State that boundary clearly before anyone joins.

Adults should consent to who receives alerts, what response is expected and when they can leave. A family notification is useful only if someone knows how to call back without shaming or escalating the victim. Trend Micro's alert guide includes potential-risk and setup-incomplete states; even if the interface describes a member as currently safe, read that as “no current app warning,” not surveillance of every conversation or proof that no fraud is underway.

Is ScamCheck safe for privacy?

The legitimate app has a defensible reason to request sensitive access when its corresponding feature is enabled. That doesn't make every permission cost-free. The Apple App Store privacy label says data not linked to identity may include user content, search history, usage data and diagnostics for analytics or functionality, while Apple notes that the developer supplied and Apple didn't verify those details. Google Play says the app may collect personal information, messages and other categories, encrypts data in transit and supports deletion requests; its panel is also developer supplied.

Those disclosures don't automatically contradict Trend Micro's narrower statement that submitted or scanned content isn't stored. “Content storage,” telemetry, diagnostics and feature processing are different questions. Read the current Trend Micro privacy notice, use operating-system privacy controls, submit the minimum content and request deletion through the documented route when appropriate. If an employer or another adult asks you to install the app, the decision should still be informed rather than coerced.

How strong is the independent evidence for ScamCheck accuracy?

As of this review, we didn't find a current public independent result that justifies a numeric ScamCheck detection score. An AMTSO H1 2026 test plan lists Trend Micro Premium Security Suite plus ScamCheck among products intended for a scam/phishing evaluation. A plan explains methodology and participants; it isn't an outcome. We won't turn it into a badge or percentage.

Store ratings describe user satisfaction, not controlled efficacy, and they mix versions, regions and phone configurations. Vendor demonstrations establish that a feature exists, not how it performs against unseen attacks. This evidence gap is why our review doesn't include an aggregate rating in the page or schema. ScamCheck can still be worth using as an additional signal, but the safe operating model must assume both false positives and false negatives.

Handle false positives and false negatives differently

For a likely false positive, pause the risky action anyway and reproduce the check with the complete relevant context but no secrets. Verify the sender through a known channel and report the scan result through the app. If the content concerns a legitimate invoice, password reset or medical appointment, contact the organization from its official app or saved record rather than clicking through the flagged item.

For a likely false negative, trust the contradiction. A request for cryptocurrency, gift cards, remote control, a one-time code or secrecy remains dangerous even when the app sees no known indicator. Preserve the content and use the current official support route for a repeatable product problem. Never send more money or information to create a better sample.

What to do after money, credentials or a code were sent

Stop communicating through the suspicious channel. Contact the bank, card issuer, exchange or affected service using its official app or a number on an existing statement. Ask about transfer recall, card replacement, account locks and session revocation. Change exposed passwords from a trusted device, inspect recovery details and MFA methods, and don't reuse a password that appeared in the conversation.

Preserve messages, transaction IDs, phone numbers, account handles, dates and screenshots after masking them for any public discussion. Report the account and content to the platform and the relevant national fraud authority. Trend Micro's scam safety guidance can help with recognition, but the bank or service owns the urgent containment. A later clean scan can't revoke a session or reverse a transfer by itself.

ScamCheck versus Trend Micro Mobile Security

ScamCheck focuses on social-engineering content, suspicious communications and family risk escalation. Mobile Security is a separate security product with broader device, app, malware and web controls, particularly on Android. Marketing pages can mention similar scam or web features in both products, and Premium bundles may provide more than one app. That overlap is a reason to compare entitlements and permissions, not to install everything automatically.

Choose ScamCheck when the core need is interpreting messages, calls, links, screenshots and possible impersonation. Choose or evaluate Mobile Security when Android app scanning, device-security controls and the wider mobile security suite matter. Some households may use both, but duplicate SMS, notification, call or web filters can create repeated alerts and unclear ownership. Who should use ScamCheck—and who can skip it

It's a sensible fit for a person who wants a visible second opinion before responding to unfamiliar delivery, bank, marketplace, romance, job or investment messages. Family Circle can help when relatives already have a respectful callback plan. People who regularly help parents or clients interpret suspicious communications may also benefit from the structured red flags, provided they minimize submitted data and obtain consent.

You can skip it if you won't grant the permissions required by the features you want, already have overlapping protection that you understand, or expect an app to guarantee every contact. It's also a poor fit for covert monitoring of another adult. The broader scam-protection comparison helps choose among product-level approaches, but no tool replaces transaction limits, MFA, independent callbacks and a willingness to stop when pressure rises.

ScamCheck safe-use checklist

• Official app: developer, package/listing and current update are verified.
• Correct entitlement: trial, store subscription, bundle or family invitation is identified.
• Permission by feature: every sensitive access has a named purpose you use.
• Minimum submission: OTPs, full accounts, addresses and unrelated private data are redacted.
• Result language understood: an alert stops action; no alert never authenticates it.
• Independent route ready: official app, saved number or family code word is available.
• Family consent recorded: members understand shared summaries and response expectations.
• Incident contacts saved: bank, card issuer and account-recovery routes don't depend on a suspicious message.
• Billing owner known: Apple, Google, Trend Micro or a partner is recorded with the renewal date.
• Quarterly review: unused permissions, duplicate filters and inactive members are removed.

The app is doing its job when it creates enough friction to check a consequential request. Keep that friction. The safest configuration isn't every switch on; it's the smallest set of understood features that changes a real decision.
