Norton begins with one-device AntiVirus Plus and expands into cross-platform 360 subscriptions that can protect Macs, Windows PCs, Android phones and iPhones from one account. The products overlap at malware, web and network protection, then solve different household problems.

The important correction to most comparisons is that Norton does have a real application-aware firewall on a Mac. It can allow or block apps, report their traffic and pair those controls with Intrusion Prevention and Remote Access Protection. Intego still offers the more granular Mac-oriented firewall workflow, but “Intego has a firewall, Norton does not” is false. The fair comparison is NetBarrier's visible control against Smart Firewall's integrated threat-prevention model.

Quick verdict: who wins each real Mac job?

A universal winner would be convenient and wrong. Someone protecting one MacBook after downloading unsigned audio tools has a different job from a family managing two Macs, a Windows desktop and three phones. The first buyer should start with protection evidence and network behavior. The second must count useful seats and remove every platform-ineligible feature before assigning value.

Norton wins our default recommendation because its current same-cohort Mac-malware result is stronger and AntiVirus Plus has the lower first payment. Intego wins the narrower ownership cases where Mac specialization changes daily use: detailed network rules, a predictable all-Mac seat ladder and lower published renewal prices. Both are credible choices; the losing choice is paying for a bundle whose decisive feature can't run on the device.

2026 lab showdown: a tie, then a clear Norton lead

AV-TEST's March 2026 macOS Tahoe results put Intego ONE 1.2.3 and Norton 360 26.3 in the same field. Each earned 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability, producing the same 18/18 total. That's strong current support for both products. It can't be broken by reaching for an older award or a different operating system.

The AV-Comparatives Mac Security Test & Review 2026 gives us the useful separation. The lab tested Intego ONE Complete 1.2 and Norton AntiVirus Plus for Mac 26.3 in April and May on macOS Tahoe. The set contained 1,500 Mac-malware samples, 1,500 potentially unwanted applications and 100 Windows-malware samples.

Norton detected 99.9% of the Mac set and Intego 96.7%. Norton detected 95% of the potentially unwanted applications and Intego 94%; both detected 100% of the Windows-malware set. Both products received Approved Mac Security certification, and the report says none of the reviewed products caused a meaningful performance impact in its performance check. Norton has the stronger result without turning Intego into an uncertified or unusably heavy product.

A separate SE Labs Norton 360 evaluation ran from February 18 to March 9, 2026. Norton blocked all 11 targeted full-chain attacks, left no system compromised and earned 176/176 for Protection Accuracy. This supports Norton's current case, but it isn't a direct Intego comparison: Intego's available SE Labs result comes from a different 2025 test window and must not be placed beside it as if both products faced the same attacks.

What the laboratory results prove—and what they can't

The 99.9% and 96.7% figures deserve weight because they come from the same lab, platform, test window and sample set. The 3.2-point difference corresponds to roughly 48 detections across a 1,500-sample set, although that arithmetic isn't a forecast of exactly 48 infections on your Mac. Product updates, cloud access, sample prevalence and your own exposure change. The sound conclusion is narrower: Norton handled this current Mac-malware set better.

Laboratories also don't settle firewall usability, subscription value or whether a household can use its seats. AV-TEST's performance score and AV-Comparatives' no-meaningful-impact finding are better evidence than forum claims that every Norton installation is heavy or every Mac-native app is automatically light. They still don't guarantee that an old Intel Mac with limited storage, a VPN filter and several browser extensions will feel identical to a new Apple-silicon Mac.

We therefore use the same-test results as the protection layer of the decision, then test every other claim against its own evidence. Firewall controls come from current product documentation, not an antivirus score. Prices are dated snapshots, not permanent facts. Community complaints identify what to trial—prompts, CPU use, false positives and uninstall behavior—but don't replace controlled evidence or a reproducible setup.

First-year price is only half the invoice

At the US price check on August 8, 2026, Norton wins the first payment at every directly useful seat count. AntiVirus Plus costs $29.99 for one device, Standard $39.99 for three and Deluxe $49.99 for five. Intego ONE Essential costs $39.99 for one Mac, $54.99 for three and $69.99 for five. A comparison that stops there makes Norton look cheaper in every household.

The published renewal changes the order. Norton lists $59.99 for AntiVirus Plus, $94.99 for Standard and $124.99 for Deluxe. Intego lists $49.99, $66.99 and $84.99 for the equivalent Essential seat counts. Norton remains broader and may still be better value, but the continuing price is higher. The fair question is whether cross-platform seats, VPN and account extras are worth the difference after the promotion ends.

Both subscriptions auto-renew unless renewal is disabled. Norton says it emails in advance and may bill an annual renewal up to 35 days before the current term ends. Intego's current guidance says it sends notice 7–10 days before renewal. Save the checkout screen and renewal email because the account-specific price controls; taxes, campaigns and future list prices can change after this dated check.

Intego Advanced and Complete are different comparisons. Advanced adds SmartClean and begins at $69.99 for one Mac with an $84.99 published renewal. Complete adds Intego VPN and begins at $89.99 with a $134.99 renewal. Don't upgrade because “Advanced” sounds safer: the added cleanup tool doesn't improve VirusBarrier's detection engine. Buy the higher tier only if that named extra replaces something you'd otherwise purchase.

Core Mac protection: where the products overlap

Both suites monitor files in real time, scan on demand, quarantine detections and block malicious web activity. Both can detect Windows malware so a Mac doesn't pass an infected file to a PC user, and both require their macOS extensions and security permissions before every layer is active. Neither replaces Gatekeeper, XProtect, application updates, a standard user account or backups. A paid scanner is an additional layer, not permission to install an unsigned “update” from an advertisement.

Intego's core is VirusBarrier. It offers scheduled and manual scans, real-time monitoring, quarantine and configurable handling of suspicious files. Norton's Mac client includes Smart, Quick, Full and targeted scans, schedules, external-storage scanning, download intelligence, Safe Web, quarantine and Security History. AV-Comparatives described the current installation and core interface as straightforward. Norton's scam protection on macOS is narrower than the broad marketing phrase: the lab report says it's limited to Safe Web on the tested Mac client, with suspicious material also available for submission to Norton Genie. Don't import Windows-only deepfake or message features without a current Mac support page.

NetBarrier vs Smart Firewall: control versus integration

NetBarrier is Intego's strongest reason to ignore a simple protection-score ranking. It can control incoming and outgoing application connections, distinguish local from internet traffic and expose a rule decision such as Allow, Ask or Deny. Current ONE groups controls under Network Rules, Monitoring and a Security Switch, while X9 documentation describes Home, Work, Public Hotspot and VPN contexts. Norton Smart Firewall isn't a renamed copy of the inbound macOS firewall. Norton's current Smart Firewall guidance documents application allow/block rules and a Traffic Monitor that reports app data use. The Mac feature set also includes Intrusion Prevention and Remote Access Protection. That gives Norton a coherent network-defense layer for someone who wants the suite to make more decisions and surface suspicious traffic in one place.

Intego wins when you want to see and tune which app talks to which destination under different network conditions. Norton wins when you want application rules combined with intrusion and remote-access defenses and prefer fewer separate tools. In either product, begin with the narrowest rule for the exact signed app. Disabling the firewall, allowing every process or removing the network filter can make a symptom disappear while leaving the original risk unresolved.

VPN, cleanup and account extras without feature-count tricks

Norton 360 Standard and Deluxe include Norton VPN on supported Macs, making Standard the cheaper useful VPN bundle in this comparison. Norton's Mac support documentation describes encrypted no-log browsing, ad-tracker blocking, a kill switch and an option to allow local devices such as printers while the VPN is connected. Those are useful capabilities, but an antivirus subscription isn't automatically the best VPN for every region, streaming service or threat model. Test reconnection, local-network access and the locations you actually use.

Intego adds VPN only in ONE Complete, so a one-Mac buyer moves from Essential's $39.99 first term to Complete's $89.99. If you already own a trusted VPN, Essential plus that service can be a cleaner choice than buying Complete for duplication.

Cleanup is less decisive than either vendor suggests. Compare the exact files and startup items each tool can inspect, not the size of a “junk” counter. macOS storage management and a careful Applications review remain safer baselines than deleting every suggested cache.

Norton Password Manager can work through supported Mac browsers, and Standard/Deluxe may include Dark Web Monitoring depending on plan and country. Cloud Backup, Norton Family Parental Control and SafeCam must be removed from the Mac value calculation: Norton's own system requirements say they're unsupported on macOS. Devices, macOS support and the permission checklist

Norton is the clear account winner when operating systems are mixed. AntiVirus Plus covers one PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone; Standard and Deluxe cover three or five supported devices. Feature availability still changes by platform, but one account can allocate seats across the household. Intego ONE subscriptions cover one, three or five supported Macs. Intego Antivirus for Windows is separate, and an ONE seat shouldn't be treated as Android or iOS antivirus coverage.

For macOS compatibility, current 2026 laboratory entries confirm both products on Tahoe. Intego ONE currently requires macOS 12.4 or later, while its older X9 products have different version windows. Norton's public documentation is broader in one place and stricter in another: one support page mentions macOS 10.13+, while current product materials say the current and previous two macOS versions. Installation isn't finished when the main window turns green. Intego needs the relevant Full Disk Access and system or network extension approvals; the Intego compatibility and permissions guide shows how to verify them. Norton on newer macOS releases may need its endpoint security extension, network content filter, Full Disk Access, Smart Firewall approval and browser protections. Review System Settings after every major macOS upgrade instead of assuming an old approval survived.

Apple silicon support is now normal for both vendors, but old leftovers still cause trouble. A previous antivirus can leave a system extension or network filter after its visible app has disappeared. Before blaming the replacement, inspect Login Items & Extensions, Network filters, Full Disk Access and the vendor's own removal state. Performance and daily ownership: test the weakest Mac

The controlled evidence is reassuring. Both products earned 6/6 for performance at AV-TEST in March 2026, and AV-Comparatives reported no meaningful performance impact for any reviewed Mac product. That's more useful than the familiar forum shorthand that Norton is always heavy or Intego is automatically light because it began on the Mac. Neither claim is specific enough to guide a current purchase.

Real ownership still depends on storage pressure, memory, background indexing, browser filters and the age of the Mac. A first full scan can overlap with Spotlight, Time Machine, Photos analysis or a cloud-sync client. Run the trial on the oldest actively used machine, restart once, allow the initial update and scan to finish, then repeat the same work: open the normal browser tabs, join a video call, copy a large folder and wake from sleep.

Record Activity Monitor CPU and memory only when a slowdown is reproducible. A short spike during scanning isn't the same as sustained idle use. Firewall prompts are also part of performance in the human sense. NetBarrier can ask more questions when granular control is enabled; Norton can feel simpler because the suite makes more decisions. One isn't automatically better. A technical user may value the explanation, while a family member may click Allow reflexively until the rules become meaningless. Trial the workflow with the person who will actually use the Mac.

Privacy, support and refunds: the exit path matters

Both products process security telemetry, reputation queries and account data to deliver cloud-assisted protection. A broad “no logs” VPN phrase doesn't describe every antivirus, account and diagnostic record. Review the current privacy notice for the exact product and region, minimize optional data sharing where controls exist, and avoid uploading a confidential file to a cloud scanner unless the vendor explains the handling and the risk is acceptable.

Norton offers 24/7 support on its current product pages, and its current cancellation and refund policy provides a 60-day refund window for eligible annual purchases and annual renewals. An initial monthly purchase generally has a 14-day refund window, while subsequent monthly renewals aren't normally refundable; regional exceptions apply. Norton may charge an annual renewal up to 35 days before the term ends after advance email notice. Intego's current refund policy provides a 30-day window for eligible direct purchases and renewals, and the company says it sends renewal notice 7–10 days ahead. Marketplace and reseller purchases follow the seller's process, so confirm who billed the card before opening the wrong support channel.

A longer refund period is useful only if you test before it expires. Install on the weakest Mac, confirm every required permission, run a full scan, test the firewall with one known app, connect and reconnect the VPN if included, sleep and wake the Mac, and complete one uninstall or disable-renewal rehearsal. Save the confirmation email. A product that protects well but can't be cleanly administered is a poor long-term fit.

Who should choose Intego ONE?

Choose Intego ONE Essential when all protected computers are Macs and NetBarrier is a named requirement, not a box you'll never open. It's especially convincing for a developer, researcher or advanced home user who wants to distinguish local, internet and application connections and who will maintain narrow rules. Its three- and five-Mac published renewals are also materially lower than Norton Standard and Deluxe at this check.

Intego is also the cleaner story for someone who wants a Mac-focused account rather than a cross-platform feature matrix. The product doesn't ask you to remember that an advertised cloud-backup or parental-control benefit belongs to Windows or mobile. Advanced can make sense if SmartClean replaces a cleanup subscription you already pay for; Complete can make sense if its VPN passes your own trial. Neither upgrade improves the antivirus engine.

Don't choose Intego because “made for Mac” proves stronger malware detection. It didn't in the latest same-cohort AV-Comparatives test. Norton led 99.9% to 96.7%, while both were perfect at AV-TEST. The honest Intego case is granular Mac control, a coherent all-Mac seat ladder and renewal value—not immunity from comparative evidence.

Who should choose Norton?

Choose Norton when the strongest current directly comparable detection result leads the decision. AntiVirus Plus is the simple one-device starting point: it costs less in year one, includes the Mac antivirus and Smart Firewall layers and doesn't require paying for the larger 360 bundle. A separate current SE Labs attack evaluation strengthens that protection-first case without substituting for the direct AV-Comparatives comparison.

Move to Standard or Deluxe when the household genuinely needs mixed-platform seats or the included VPN and Password Manager. Standard is often the sweet spot for a Mac, PC and phone because it covers three devices and brings the VPN into the bundle. Deluxe makes sense for five devices, but count only usable benefits. Cloud Backup, Norton Family and SafeCam don't work on the Mac even though the subscription may provide them to compatible devices.

Don't choose Norton on the $29.99 or $49.99 card alone. Model the $59.99, $94.99 or $124.99 published renewal and decide whether the broader account still earns the premium. A Mac-only household that will use detailed firewall rules may reasonably prefer Intego after year one even though Norton has the stronger current malware result.

How to switch without running two real-time suites

Don't install Norton over an active Intego stack or Intego over an active Norton stack as an informal A/B test. Both can register endpoint, web and network components. Overlap can create duplicate alerts, conflicting quarantine, blocked connections, battery complaints and an impossible diagnosis because no one knows which filter acted first.

First export or photograph any custom firewall rules and quarantine decision you may need. Confirm the new product supports the Mac and that you can still access the old account. Turn off auto-renewal separately if the switch is also a billing decision. After restart, inspect System Settings for leftover endpoint extensions, network filters, Full Disk Access entries and login items. Install the replacement from the vendor account or official download page, grant only the documented permissions and restart again if requested. Update signatures, run a first scan, verify the firewall and web extension, then test sleep, VPN, local printers and normal browsing. Keep the old installer out of Login Items and don't restore its preferences into the new suite.
