How to Uninstall TotalAV Completely—and Know It Is Gone

“Completely removed” has a practical definition

Complete removal doesn't mean searching the whole disk for any file containing the word TotalAV. Logs, a downloaded installer, browser history or an old screenshot can't run protection. The useful standard is narrower: the installed app is gone, no verified TotalAV executable starts or keeps running, its intended system integration is removed, and the security provider you want is active.

This distinction prevents the two most common mistakes. One reader stops after deleting a desktop shortcut, while another begins deleting services and registry entries because a harmless text file remains. Work from function to residue: uninstall through the registered route, restart, reproduce the symptom, identify its owner and act only on evidence.

Removal and cancellation are separate jobs

Deleting TotalAV from a device doesn't tell TotalAV, Apple or Google Play to stop billing. Apple explicitly warns that deleting an app doesn't cancel its subscription, and the same separation applies on other platforms. If you no longer want the plan, turn off auto-renewal with the billing owner and keep the confirmation before or after you remove the software.

Before uninstalling: preserve what you may need

Open quarantine and decide whether any known-safe file needs restoration. Record custom exclusions, scheduled scans or VPN locations only if you intend to recreate them elsewhere. If the computer is unstable, save a screenshot of the error and note the app version, operating-system version and whether TotalAV appears in Installed apps. Identify which products are actually installed. TotalAV Antivirus, Total VPN, Total Adblock and Total Password can be separate apps, extensions or subscriptions; the main TotalAV review maps the suite. Removing the antivirus doesn't necessarily remove a browser extension or companion application. Don't tick every security-related item in a bulk uninstaller; map each item to something you knowingly installed.

Plan the protection handoff before the reboot

If TotalAV is the registered real-time provider on Windows, Microsoft Defender commonly resumes after the third-party suite is removed, but verify rather than assume. If you chose another antivirus, have its installer from the official vendor ready and know which product should own real-time protection after restart. Disconnecting from the internet isn't normally required for a standard uninstall. It may even prevent an installer repair or account check. If the device is actively compromised, use a separate malware-recovery plan rather than treating antivirus removal as the cure. Choose the route that matches the device

TotalAV's current official uninstall article separates Windows 11, Windows 10, macOS, Android and iOS. Follow the vendor route where one exists, because security software can install services, extensions and login components that dragging a folder to Trash or deleting files can't deregister cleanly. The first path should be boring: the registered uninstaller, the requested approval and a restart.

Uninstall TotalAV on Windows 11

Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Search for TotalAV, open the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall, then confirm again. Approve the User Account Control prompt only when it names the expected TotalAV uninstaller and the publisher information is consistent with the installed product. Complete the vendor dialog and accept the restart when offered.

This is the sequence in TotalAV's current guide and it aligns with Microsoft's Windows removal guidance. Don't delete `Program Files` first. The registered uninstaller needs its own files to stop services, detach components and remove the application record in the intended order.

Uninstall TotalAV on Windows 10

Search Start for TotalAV and choose Uninstall, or open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Select TotalAV and choose Uninstall/Change. Approve the expected prompt, run the TotalAV uninstaller and restart. Microsoft also lists Settings → Apps as a supported route, but Control Panel remains useful when an older desktop-program entry is easier to find there.

After restart, check both Settings and Programs and Features if the entry looked inconsistent before removal. A stale entry with no working uninstaller is a repair problem, not a signal to download the first “TotalAV removal tool” found in search. TotalAV doesn't document a public branded removal utility in its current uninstall guide.

Restart is part of the Windows removal, not decoration

Security software can keep services, drivers or shell integrations loaded while Windows is running. The official TotalAV flow ends with a restart so Windows can unload those components and complete scheduled deletion. Judge the result after that reboot. Ending the same protected task repeatedly in Task Manager before restart can make it relaunch without telling you whether the uninstaller succeeded.

Save work before beginning and use Restart, not a fast shutdown followed immediately by power-on, when you're testing a stubborn removal. Once Windows returns, wait a minute for startup tasks to settle. Then search Installed apps, inspect the notification sender and check the signed path of any process you still suspect.

Uninstall TotalAV on Mac with its own menu command

Open TotalAV from Applications. In the macOS menu bar, choose TotalAV → Uninstall TotalAV, confirm, and enter administrator credentials when macOS asks to modify the system extension and make changes. TotalAV's current guide shows two approval prompts before the uninstaller reports success. Finish that flow instead of dragging the app to Trash first.

Apple's current Mac guidance says a vendor-provided uninstaller is preferable because it can remove login items, extensions and other data stored outside the app bundle. If TotalAV won't open, quit it fully and restart. If macOS still says the app is in use, Apple's supported next step is Safe Mode—not a random cleaner.

Check Mac login items and extensions only after the uninstaller

Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions. Review Open at Login, App Background Activity and added or network-extension sections for a TotalAV item that the completed uninstaller should have removed. Apple documents this location for login items, background activity and third-party extensions. A disabled but clearly named orphan is different from an active network filter.

Don't remove an unfamiliar extension merely because it has a generic security-sounding name. Confirm the developer and connection to TotalAV first. If the item persists after the official uninstall and restart, capture its exact label and macOS version, then use verified TotalAV or Apple support. Manual deletion inside `/Library` without a component map can break another product or leave its registration behind.

Remove TotalAV from Android

Touch and hold the TotalAV app icon and choose Uninstall, then confirm. The store route is Google Play → profile icon → Manage apps & devices → Manage → TotalAV → Uninstall, which matches Google's current Android instructions. Menu names can vary by manufacturer, but the app-info page should expose the same uninstall action.

If Uninstall is unavailable, determine whether the phone is supervised, belongs to an employer or uses a work profile. Managed apps can be protected by administration policy, and the device owner—not a cleanup app—must change that policy. Don't remove a work profile or device-management control from an organization-owned phone without authorization.

After Android removal, check the VPN separately

TotalAV plans can include VPN functionality, and Android can keep an always-on or remembered VPN configuration visible. Open Settings → Network & internet → VPN; on some phones, search Settings for VPN. Google documents how to turn off always-on VPN and forget a saved connection.

Remove only a connection you can identify as TotalAV-related and no longer need. A separately installed Total VPN app or an employer VPN isn't the same object as the antivirus app; the TotalAV VPN guide distinguishes bundled access from an independent VPN setup. Delete TotalAV from iPhone or iPad

Touch and hold TotalAV, select Remove App, then choose Delete App and confirm. “Remove from Home Screen” isn't deletion; it leaves the app in App Library. Apple's current instructions also note that a missing Delete option can result from Screen Time restrictions, where Deleting Apps must be allowed.

Deleting the iOS app doesn't cancel an Apple subscription or a TotalAV website subscription. Check billing separately. If you installed a VPN configuration, open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and identify the owner before removing it. Don't delete a school or employer management profile just because TotalAV was also installed.

If TotalAV won't uninstall, move up a controlled ladder

Start by closing TotalAV and other installers, then retry the registered uninstall and restart. If the entry is missing, the dialog fails or Windows reports a broken package, use Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter linked from its support page. On Mac, use the TotalAV menu command, restart and Safe Mode if macOS says the app is in use. Keep the exact error and stage.

Only after the official path fails should you contact TotalAV through its verified help center. Current search results include unrelated institutional PDFs and community uploads that advertise invented support numbers and removal tools. Type the official help domain yourself or follow a saved account link. Removal never requires remote access to online banking, a gift card or a payment to release files.

“TotalAV is still here” can mean five different things

Identify the symptom before fixing it: an installed-app entry, a running executable, a startup item, a browser notification or a VPN/extension. These live in different systems. A website notification can arrive when no TotalAV executable exists; an orphaned context-menu label can remain when its target file is gone; a separately installed Total VPN process can be legitimate even after the antivirus is removed.

Reproduce one symptom and record its origin. In Task Manager, inspect the executable path and digital signature rather than trusting a generic process label. In a browser notification, open the sender's site-permission origin. In Startup apps, use the publisher and file location. In VPN settings, identify the owning app. Evidence turns “leftover files” into a specific, solvable object.

A background process remains after restart

If a process returns after a completed uninstall and reboot, open its file location and properties without executing anything new. Confirm the path, signer and product name. Community reports sometimes mention `SecurityService`, but that label is too generic to delete blindly. Another security product or legitimate Windows component may use similar wording.

If the signed file belongs to TotalAV, check whether another Total Security product remains installed and whether the TotalAV entry is still present in Control Panel. Preserve the path and screenshot for support. If the file is unsigned, in an unusual user-writable folder or paired with other suspicious behavior, scan with the active trusted provider and treat it as a malware-identification problem rather than assuming the real TotalAV installer created it.

A startup item or tray prompt remains

Open Task Manager → Startup apps on Windows, or System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions on Mac. Disable a verified orphan to stop the immediate prompt while you diagnose the broken uninstall; disabling is reversible and safer than deleting a service. Then map its command or developer to the actual installed component.

A subscription reminder may also be a browser push alert rather than a startup program. Click the notification's settings control or inspect the browser's site-notification list instead of interacting with the ad. “Scan with TotalAV” remains in the right-click menu

An orphaned shell command can survive a damaged uninstall and point to a file that no longer exists. Older community threads report this symptom. Confirm that the main application is gone and that selecting the item doesn't launch a living executable. The label alone isn't proof that active antivirus code remains.

Don't follow a forum recipe that deletes every registry key containing a brand name. First repair or reinstall the same official TotalAV build and run its uninstaller again, or give verified support the Windows version and command behavior. Registry changes should be narrow, backed up and tied to an identified shell-extension registration; that's an advanced recovery, not the default reader path.

What to do with leftover folders and installers

After a successful uninstall and restart, a downloaded installer in Downloads can be deleted normally. Empty log, cache or preference folders aren't active protection, but they may contain diagnostic or account data. Remove them only after confirming no TotalAV product still uses them and after any support case is closed. A folder that can't be deleted may still be held open; identify the owner instead of forcing it.

Don't search the entire drive and delete every match. Browser caches, backups, restore points and article screenshots can contain the same word. “Zero text matches” isn't a useful success criterion. No installed app, no signed running component, no startup integration and correct protection state are the checks that matter.

Third-party uninstallers: a fallback, not a source of truth

A reputable uninstaller may locate a broken registered program and show candidate leftovers, but its cleanup list is still a proposal. Review the publisher, path and relationship to TotalAV before accepting deletions. Don't install an unknown “TotalAV removal tool” from a search ad, PDF, video description or download portal merely because the normal entry is missing.

Registry cleaners add risk without proving completion. They can remove shared installer data or unrelated keys and make later repair harder. Prefer the vendor uninstaller, Windows' official troubleshooter, Apple Safe Mode and verified support. When an expert performs manual cleanup, it should begin from a captured component, not from a brand-name search-and-destroy pass.

What current community reports teach us

A May 2026 r/techsupport case describes an app removed from Settings while a process and subscription prompt allegedly continued. Another thread describes a startup item labeled `SecurityService`; older posts describe a dead “Scan with TotalAV” menu command. These reports reveal the symptoms people actually search for.

They don't establish a universal component list or prove that a named process belongs to TotalAV on every machine. Community replies frequently jump to third-party uninstallers, folder deletion or registry editing without verifying the owner. We use the reports to build a diagnostic path, while current vendor and operating-system documentation controls the first-line action.

Verify that TotalAV is gone and protection is active

After restart, search Installed apps and Programs and Features. Confirm no TotalAV window, tray process or verified startup item returns. Open a few normal folders and right-click a file to check whether the shell item remains. Review browser notifications and VPN settings separately. If a companion product is intentionally retained, document that exception instead of calling the whole suite removed.

On Windows, open Windows Security and check Virus & threat protection or Security providers for the antivirus you intend to use. Run a quick update and scan with that provider. On Mac or mobile, open the replacement you chose and confirm its intended permissions and status. Don't infer protection from a green icon left in a browser tab.

When reinstalling TotalAV is the cleanest repair step

If the uninstall entry exists but its executable is missing, reinstalling the current official build can restore the component map and registered uninstaller. Sign in through the official TotalAV site, install over the damaged copy, restart if requested, then run the normal removal again. This is often safer than guessing which files and keys belonged to the old installation.

Don't reinstall merely because a browser notification uses the TotalAV name; fix the browser permission first. Don't reinstall over an actively compromised machine from a pop-up link. The decision depends on the surviving symptom: broken package registration can justify repair, while an unrelated scam page can't.

Account data and browser extensions after removal

Removing the antivirus app doesn't delete a TotalAV account, invoices or cloud-held subscription records. It also doesn't necessarily remove Total Adblock or Total Password from every browser. Review Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari extensions and remove only the companion extension you no longer want. Export password-vault data before removing a password manager.

If your goal is account deletion, use the verified privacy or account-support route and understand what billing records must be retained by law. Software removal, subscription cancellation, refund and personal-data deletion are four different operations. Keeping them separate prevents an urgent device fix from destroying information needed for a refund or migration.
