Intego Account, Serial Number and Device Transfer: ONE vs X9
Intego now has one online account but two activation models. ONE uses the purchase email and account password; X9 still uses a serial number and can consume a licensed seat on every serialized Mac. This guide helps you identify the generation, recover access, free the right seat and prove the new Mac works before you retire the old one.

Quick answer: If the app is Intego ONE, sign in to My Account, check Devices & Users, remove only the verified old device when a seat is needed, download the current installer on the new Mac and sign in with the account email/password. If it's X9, save the matching serial, deauthorize VirusBarrier on the old Mac when possible—or remove that device in the portal—then install the correct X9 product and serialize it on the new Mac. Removal frees a seat; it doesn't uninstall, erase, cancel or refund anything.
Start by proving whether the subscription is ONE or X9
The product name determines every credential that follows. Intego's current X9-to-ONE article is explicit: ONE activates with the Intego account username/password and doesn't issue a serial number. X9 applications still use a serial and product-specific authorization.
| Question | Intego ONE | Intego X9 |
|---|---|---|
| App shape | Unified ONE app | Separate VirusBarrier/NetBarrier and bundle utilities |
| Activation | Account email + password | User/company name + matching serial |
| Serial expected? | No | Yes |
| Device area | Devices & Users | May appear as Devices or Devices & Users |
| Local deauthorize menu | Manage account/device assignment | VirusBarrier → Deauthorize VirusBarrier |
| Transfer destination | Install and sign in | Install correct generation/product and serialize |
| Account email change | Portal setting | Portal plus optional separate NetUpdate email update |
| Common mistake | Searching for a key that doesn't exist | Using the right-looking key with the wrong X9 product |
Don't infer the generation from an old receipt title alone. Open My Account and the installed app, record the current plan/product name, then use our ONE-versus-X9 map if the subscription was upgraded or still includes legacy utilities. This prevents a valid X9 key from being pasted into ONE—and a ONE login from being treated as a missing serial.
Activate the current My Account before diagnosing a missing license
Intego's August 5 login guide says ONE and X9 customers share the current portal. Even a long-time customer may have to verify the purchase email and create the newer portal password before first login, so “account not found” doesn't automatically mean the subscription vanished.
Use Sign In from Intego's own website and enter the registered purchase email. If activation wasn't completed on the Thank You page, look for “Verify Email Address” from `[email protected]`; a receipt confirms payment, while the verification message establishes portal access. If the purchase email is unknown or inaccessible, stop guessing and use the vendor support route with the order evidence you still possess.
Keep the recovery session on a trusted device and close it when finished. The account exposes plan, billing and device information, so a borrowed/shared browser should never keep the session signed in. We found no current primary page that establishes account MFA availability, so this guide neither promises nor denies that control.
Keep the account, Mac admin, VPN and X9 serial in separate boxes
Four secrets can appear during one transfer. The Intego account password opens the web portal and activates ONE; the Mac administrator password approves local installation and macOS permissions; Intego Privacy Protection may have separate VPN credentials; an X9 serial authorizes the matching legacy product. Reusing one value or typing it into the wrong prompt can turn a simple transfer into an account-lock or exposure problem.

The official password article explicitly separates the My Account password from both the VPN login and the Mac admin/login password. Store the X9 serial in a password manager or secure licensing record; don't paste it into email subject lines, public forums or screenshots.
Audit Devices & Users before removing anything
The current July 23 device guide routes users to My Account Overview → Devices & Users. Access Overview lists Active/Assigned devices, Assigned User, Last Active and the active-device total; X9 customers may also see serials and current/past subscriptions.
| Record before removal | Why it matters | Don't publish |
|---|---|---|
| Exact plan/generation | Determines account login versus serial workflow | Order number |
| Allowed and active seats | Shows whether removal is necessary | Full billing details |
| Assigned Device | Separates old Mac from family/work Macs | Device serial/identifier |
| Assigned User | Prevents evicting another person's Mac | Full email in public screenshot |
| Last Active label | Useful clue, but vendor definition is ambiguous | Treat as forensic heartbeat |
| Local app/protection state | Confirms which Mac is actually being retired | Detection paths or private filenames |
Use Last Active cautiously. The same vendor page first calls it the date/time the device was last active, then defines it as the date the application was activated. That conflict makes it an identification hint, not a reliable last-seen audit log. Match device name, assigned user, local app state and ownership before clicking Remove.
Transfer Intego in eight evidence-based steps
- Identify ONE or X9. Open the account and the installed app, then record the exact product generation before looking for a serial number or removing a device.
- Secure and verify the account. Confirm the purchase email, complete portal verification if needed, reset the account password through the vendor route and keep every credential private.
- Audit seats and the destination Mac. Record the plan, allowed device count, assigned devices and destination compatibility before changing the active-device list.
- Back up and label the old Mac. Finish a current backup, record the old Mac name and protection state, and distinguish it from every family or work device in the portal.
- Free the correct seat. For ONE, remove the verified old device in Devices & Users when necessary; for X9, deauthorize locally if possible or remove the old device through the portal.
- Install from the authenticated account. Download the current installer on the destination Mac from Intego My Account rather than copying an old app bundle or using a search result.
- Activate with the right credential. Sign in to ONE with the account email and password, or serialize the matching X9 product with its valid key and a nonblank user/company name.
- Verify first, then retire the old Mac. Confirm the destination registration, permissions, updates, real-time protection and scan history before uninstalling Intego or following Apple's erase process on the old Mac.
The order protects both availability and evidence. A backup and device record come before seat removal; destination activation and protection proof come before uninstalling or erasing the old Mac. If a plan has a spare seat, you can reduce downtime by preparing the new Mac first, but never leave two real-time installations active beyond the entitlement or testing window.
The HowTo duration covers account/seat handling and destination setup, not the time needed for every backup, Migration Assistant transfer or full-disk scan. Those operations vary with data volume, storage and network speed, so a fixed completion promise would be misleading.
Move Intego ONE with the account—not an X9 serial
On the old Mac, capture the ONE version, plan, device name and protected status, then finish a current backup. In Devices & Users, confirm whether the destination can use a free seat. If not, select Remove beside the verified old device, review the confirmation and choose Yes, Remove Device; don't remove an unfamiliar assigned user just because its timestamp looks old.
On the new Mac, sign in to My Account and download the current installer from Overview. Complete the current ONE installation and proof workflow: account login, Full Disk Access, Network Extension/content filter, notifications, app/definition updates, Real-Time Protection, Firewall, first full scan and restart. The transfer is complete when the new device appears correctly and those controls persist.
ONE has no serial-number handoff. If the destination asks for a name and serial, identify the downloaded generation before entering anything. A legacy X9 installer can be valid software and still be the wrong route for a current ONE plan.
When the old X9 Mac works, deauthorize it locally first
Open VirusBarrier on the old Mac, use the VirusBarrier menu beside the Apple menu and choose Deauthorize VirusBarrier. Intego's current removal article says this action works for any Intego software and doesn't need to be repeated for every component. Authenticate the local change when prompted and confirm the old seat is released.
Save the X9 serial securely before deauthorizing. Download the correct X9 installer/product on the new Mac, enter a nonblank User or Company Name and the matching serial, then update NetUpdate/definitions and verify the protection modules. A Mac Internet Security key shouldn't be assumed to authorize every Premium Bundle utility.
Deauthorization isn't deletion. The old Mac can still contain Intego files, network extensions, logs and private user data. If it will be sold or retired, continue through the supported uninstaller and Apple's separate erase process only after the new Mac is verified.
When the old X9 Mac is dead or gone, free the seat in the portal
Intego's transfer article provides the recovery path: sign in, open Devices/Devices & Users, find the old device and remove it in the deauthorization column. Once the correct installation is removed, the serial can be activated on another Mac.
Don't invent a replacement device name from memory. Use the assigned user, plan/serial suffix if the portal safely shows one, purchase date and any asset record you kept. If two old devices are indistinguishable, preserve the page and ask support to identify the seat rather than gambling with a family or work Mac.
Portal removal can't reach a lost Mac to erase data or uninstall software. If the machine was stolen, handle account passwords, Apple Find My/Activation Lock and organizational incident procedures separately. Freeing an Intego seat is only the licensing branch.
Recover an X9 serial without exposing it
Intego's serial-recovery guide offers five routes: the original purchase email, My Account subscription/billing, the Devices view, About VirusBarrier on a working Mac, or the official Forgot Serial tool/support. The documented format is six groups of four uppercase letters separated by dashes, but the full key remains private.
Search the purchase mailbox by vendor/order context rather than posting the serial pattern to a forum. If About VirusBarrier exposes the NetUpdate email and serial, copy them directly into secure storage and close the window. A screenshot is rarely necessary; if support asks for one, cover all but a short identifying suffix and remove unrelated email/device details.
A recent r/macbookpro discussion about an unredacted hardware-serial screenshot produced conflicting opinions about practical risk. It isn't evidence that an Intego key was abused; it's a useful reminder that a public screenshot has no revoke button, while a software license key can consume entitlement.
Fix “serial number not working” by matching the exact product
The official rejected-serial checklist names four common causes: a typing/transposition error, the wrong product or version, a coupon code mistaken for a serial, or an empty User/Company Name. Work in that order before changing account state.
| Symptom | Check | Next safe action |
|---|---|---|
| ONE asks for serial | Installer/product generation | Return to ONE account installer |
| X9 key rejected immediately | Characters, dashes, nonblank name | Copy securely; don't retype from memory |
| One X9 utility accepts, another rejects | Bundle/product entitlement | Use matching product serial/installer |
| Coupon/order code entered | Key source and label | Retrieve actual serial from portal/email |
| Too many computers | Visible seats and retired Macs | Deauthorize/remove exact old device |
| Count looks correct but error remains | Generation, plan and portal state | Escalate with redacted evidence |
Don't test a private key across random downloads. Every extra installer adds ambiguity and may expose the serial to an untrusted binary. Use the authenticated account/vendor download, then capture the exact product name, version and error if the valid-looking key still fails.
Resolve “used on too many computers” without buying twice
Intego's seat-limit article says each X9 activation consumes one of the licensed seats. The subscription can cover one, three or five Macs depending on purchase, with larger business licensing handled separately. A retired device must be deauthorized locally or removed from the portal before reuse.
First compare entitlement to the visible device inventory. If an unmistakably retired Mac holds the extra seat, remove it and retry activation once. If the portal already shows the correct count—or device names are ambiguous—don't churn removals or purchase another plan; send support the generation, plan, count, redacted device list and exact message for reconciliation.
Adding seats and changing the plan are buying decisions. The current device guide exposes Upgrade plan/Your Plan options and says 1/3/5 choices depend on subscription, but prices and renewal consequences belong in the current Intego pricing guide. Freeing a stale seat should be attempted before paying for capacity you don't need.
Change the portal email and X9 registration email deliberately
The current email-change article says Account Settings → Your Information → Edit changes the shared online account address for both ONE and X9. Future subscription notices and support replies go to the new address, so verify inbox access before leaving the session.
X9 keeps another email inside NetUpdate for update checks/software identification. Update it separately in Applications → Intego → NetUpdate → Preferences → General after unlocking with the Mac administrator password. The vendor warns that this changes the X9 installation email only; it doesn't change the online account login.
For a forgotten portal password, use Forgot Password and the registered email. Intego says the reset link is valid for 60 minutes; request a new one after expiry rather than reusing an old message. After any account change, sign out, sign in with the new state and verify Devices & Users before removing seats.
Migration Assistant copies data, not proof of protection
A Mac-to-Mac migration can carry application files and old settings, but it doesn't prove current entitlement, system/network extensions, Full Disk Access or real-time services survived correctly. Treat Intego as security infrastructure: download the current installer on the destination, activate with the correct generation and approve permissions again.
Keep the old Mac or backup until the destination starts cleanly, updates definitions, scans and survives a restart. Don't run old and new real-time engines indefinitely, and don't delete migrated system-extension remnants by hand. If the destination inherited a stale network filter or duplicate app, use the supported installer/uninstaller path and preserve the exact state.
Our current review covers protection and product fit; the installation guide covers post-transfer proof. This account page stops at entitlement and device ownership so it doesn't blur a license move into a claim that antivirus protection is already working.
Before selling the old Mac, separate license release from data erasure
Sequence matters: verify backup, record the Intego device, deauthorize/remove the seat, prove the new Mac, uninstall Intego through its supported package, then handle the computer's ownership/data reset. Deauthorization alone leaves files and data; erasing the Mac without releasing X9 first can leave a seat stuck in the portal.
Apple's current sell/give-away/trade-in guide covers backup, Erase All Content and Settings where supported, sign-outs and recovery-based erasure for other Macs. Follow that primary process after the Intego licensing branch. Never promise a buyer that “removing the antivirus account” made the computer clean.
If the Mac is dead, lost or stolen, the portal-removal route may free entitlement but can't wipe the device. Handle Apple account/Find My, workplace MDM and incident response separately, and rotate exposed credentials based on evidence rather than assuming Intego removal controls the entire Mac.
Escalate through the vendor form with a redacted proof packet
Account and serial searches are polluted by fake support-number PDFs, forum spam and unrelated trademark serials. Use Intego's own Submit a request form from the vendor support domain. Don't call a number copied from a search result, paid ad or uploaded document.
A useful packet contains: ONE/X9 generation; exact product/version; purchase email; account verification state; plan and seat allowance; old/new device labels; action attempted; exact error; and timestamp. Redact full serials, passwords, order numbers, payment details, hardware identifiers, private filenames and unrelated assigned users. A short key suffix is enough only when support asks for identification.
State the expected outcome clearly: recover portal access, identify a missing X9 serial, remove a specific stale seat, reconcile a correct-looking device count or transfer entitlement. This prevents billing, account and technical support branches from talking past one another and creates a record if the portal inventory changes.
Intego account, serial number and device transfer FAQ
Does Intego ONE have a serial number?
No. Intego's current X9-to-ONE guidance says ONE activates with the Intego account username/email and password. Serial numbers belong to the legacy X9 generation, so a ONE buyer who received no serial should sign in rather than paste an old X9 key.
Where can I find an Intego X9 serial number?
Use the original purchase email, the serial information shown for an active X9 subscription/device in My Account, About VirusBarrier on a working Mac, Intego's official Forgot Serial tool, or a vendor support request. Keep the full key out of screenshots, public posts and ordinary support descriptions.
How do I remove an old Mac from my Intego account?
Sign in through Intego's website, open Devices & Users, identify the exact Assigned Device and Assigned User, select Remove, review the confirmation and choose Yes, Remove Device. Older X9 instructions may call the same area Devices and the action Deauthorize.
Can I transfer Intego if the old Mac no longer works?
Yes, if the account and entitlement are valid. Use Devices & Users/Devices to remove the verified old installation and free its seat, then download the current installer on the new Mac. X9 will need the matching serial; ONE uses the account login.
Does removing an Intego device cancel the subscription?
No. Removing or deauthorizing a device changes license-seat assignment. It doesn't cancel auto-renewal, request a refund, erase the old Mac, remove files or uninstall the software. Billing changes are a separate action in the account.
Can I share an Intego seat with another person?
Intego's current device guide describes moving or sharing a seat when the plan has capacity. Keep the account password private: the account owner should perform the portal login and installer handoff or use an available assignment control, then verify the Assigned User and device.
What does Last Active mean in Intego Devices & Users?
Treat it as an identification hint, not a forensic last-seen record. The same current vendor page first describes it as the date/time a device was last active and later as the date the application was activated. Use device name, assigned user and local evidence together.
Why does Intego say my serial is used on too many computers?
Each X9 activation consumes a licensed seat. Deauthorize a retired Mac locally or remove the correct old device in the portal. If the visible device count already fits the license, capture the exact error and ask Intego support to reconcile the entitlement rather than buying another plan blindly.
Are the Intego account, Mac admin and VPN passwords the same?
No. Intego explicitly separates the My Account password from Privacy Protection VPN credentials and the Mac administrator/login password. ONE uses the Intego account login; macOS asks for the local admin password when authorizing installations or permissions.
Will Migration Assistant transfer my Intego license automatically?
Don't rely on it. Migration Assistant can copy applications and settings, but security software still needs current installation, account or serial activation, Full Disk Access/network permissions, updates and a protection check on the destination Mac. Verify the new Mac before erasing the old one.
Bottom line: transfer entitlement, then prove protection
The shortest safe rule is simple: ONE uses the account; X9 uses the account plus the matching serial. Audit Devices & Users before removing anything, keep credentials separate, free only the verified old seat and activate from the authenticated vendor download.
Don't confuse a licensing action with a security result. Removal isn't cancellation, deauthorization isn't uninstall, uninstall isn't erasure, and Migration Assistant isn't protection proof. Finish on the new Mac with the correct registration, current updates, required permissions, real-time protection, scan history and a restart check—then retire the old Mac.
