That distinction decides whether the product is worth using. A household that already pays for a compatible McAfee Family plan can test the current controls without buying another parental-control subscription. A new buyer who found a review quoting the old $7.99 monthly or $49.99 yearly Safe Family price should stop: those figures belong to the retired standalone storefront, not a current checkout we could verify on July 31, 2026.
What we found in live checks on July 31, 2026
The old product homepage at family.mcafee.com redirected our signed-out browser to McAfee's current Family Plans page. The legacy US Apple App Store ID and Google Play package returned unavailable pages. At the same time, McAfee's live family-plan copy still advertises parental controls, rules, time limits, device activity and location features.
The replacement isn't theoretical. The current Android Companion listing was updated January 29, 2026, and the iPhone and iPad Companion listing shows version 1.14 dated February 2, 2026. Both describe an app for a child's device that works only with parental controls attached to select McAfee subscriptions.
Is McAfee Safe Family discontinued?
Calling the entire service “discontinued” is too blunt. The old Safe Family-branded app and public standalone buying route have been displaced, while the parental-control capability continues under McAfee Family plans and a differently named child app. A person searching the old name therefore needs a replacement map, not a dead-product obituary.
McAfee hasn't placed a clear public migration notice on every stale result, which is why search pages look contradictory. Our conclusion is based on live routing and current stores, not a guessed sunset date. If an existing Safe Family installation still runs, treat it as a legacy client and confirm the account's current setup path before deleting anything.
Old Safe Family versus the current Companion architecture
The legacy design exposed Safe Family as the recognizable product and, historically, as a standalone subscription. The current design starts with a qualifying McAfee Family plan. The parent manages the family relationship and protection from the McAfee account or Protection Center, while the child device receives the separate Companion application and the policy assigned to that child.
This separation also explains a common setup failure: installing Companion directly from an app store doesn't create an entitlement, child profile or management relationship. The store descriptions say the app is for select subscribers only. Start from the live plan and invitation, then follow the official store link presented for the child.
Why McAfee still uses the Safe Family name in some places
McAfee's public estate hasn't been renamed in one clean sweep. Search indexes still hold the old standalone page, system requirements still contain a Safe Family heading, old articles call McAfee parental controls Safe Family, and independent reviewers repeat the familiar name. Current family-plan pages more often say simply “parental controls.”
Use the name as a search alias, not proof of the install route. The package ID is a better identifier than an icon or article title: the old Android app used com.mcafee.security.safefamily, while the current Android Companion uses com.mcafee.mmschild. On iOS, the current Companion App Store ID is 1622582641.
Most “2026 reviews” are reviewing the old product
TechRadar's prominent Safe Family review was published in June 2022 and evaluates the old standalone app, $8 monthly pricing and the earlier interface. Other pages updated in their headline to 2026 still quote legacy purchase terms or say the product lacks time limits, even though current official McAfee and Companion descriptions explicitly advertise rules and screen-time schedules.
Those reviews can still describe historical strengths and complaints, but they can't establish today's checkout, package ID or setup. Safe Family price in 2026: don't use the old standalone numbers
The cached old sales page showed $7.99 per month and $49.99 per year, and old App Store records list several in-app purchase prices. We couldn't reproduce a current standalone checkout from the live route. The current Companion listings are free downloads but explicitly require a supported McAfee plan, so “free app” doesn't mean free service.
Price the whole qualifying Family plan and verify that parental controls appear in the exact offer before payment. McAfee changes first-term promotions, renewal amounts and regional availability. Which McAfee plans include the current parental controls?
McAfee's current US family page lists parental controls across the Family versions of Premium, Advanced and Ultimate. It describes a household of up to two adults and four children under eighteen, with separate accounts and protection roles. Carrier, retailer and regional bundles can use different names, so the word “Family” on an invoice isn't enough by itself.
Sign in to the account that owns the purchase and inspect its people, devices and feature tiles. If the plan provides a parental-control invitation, use it. If the feature is absent, contact McAfee or the carrier before installing Companion; a child app without its control plane won't become a working parental-control service.
What happened to the 30-day Safe Family trial?
The old app listings and standalone page advertised a 30-day trial, sometimes without payment information. That was a property of the legacy Safe Family purchase flow. Because the current public route redirects to Family plans and Companion is entitlement-only, we don't present that old trial as a current promise.

What current McAfee parental controls promise
The live McAfee Family plan page says parents can view a child's device activity and location, apply age-based rules to apps and websites, set time limits, receive location notifications and allow requests for extra app time or blocked content. Those are service-level promises, not proof that every control behaves identically on every operating system.
The Companion store pages confirm the core child-device functions: app blocking, web filtering and screen-time schedules. Android also advertises Wi-Fi scanning and antivirus; iOS advertises Wi-Fi scanning and an outdated-OS device scan. Neither current store description is a complete substitute for the entitlement-specific setup screen.

The table deliberately distinguishes a current storefront from broad marketing. McAfee's system-requirements page still lists Safe Family under iOS 16+, Android 10+ and current Windows builds, while the live US Companion listing requires iOS 17. For the current iOS binary, the current store requirement wins.
Compatibility can also vary by account channel and country. Don't sideload an old APK or use a third-party mirror to force support onto a device that the current setup doesn't offer. A parental-control app has powerful permissions and should come only from the vendor-directed official store.
Screen-time control means schedules and limits, not one universal timer
Current McAfee copy says parents can set rules and time limits, and the Companion descriptions say they can build custom screen-time schedules. That's stronger evidence than an old review claiming the product has no time limits. It doesn't tell us that Android, iOS and Windows expose the same per-app daily allowance, bedtime behavior or pause action.
Test one low-stakes rule before building a complex household schedule. Give a game a short limit or block one harmless test site, wait for policy sync and confirm the child sees an understandable message. A schedule that looks correct only in the parent dashboard isn't yet a working control.
Web filtering can't see every route to content
The current Companion apps advertise web filtering for inappropriate and dangerous websites. On Android, the listing says Accessibility services are required to block websites and apps. On iOS, filtering may depend on the device permissions, content-control profile and network extension presented during setup.
Test the browsers the child actually uses, including private mode and in-app browsers. A successful block in one browser doesn't prove that a social app's embedded browser, a VPN or a newly installed browser follows the same policy. App blocking is strongest when app installation is also controlled
McAfee says Companion can block inappropriate apps, but an allow/block list becomes fragile if the child can install a new browser, VPN or alternate client without approval. Pair the McAfee policy with the operating system's purchase and installation controls. This reduces the number of escape routes without turning the device into an unexplained lock box.
On Android, Google Play approval and age settings can complement the Companion app. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's purchase restrictions and Screen Time passcode remain relevant even when McAfee is installed. Keep the parent account password and device-management code separate from the child's screen-lock code.
Location and geofencing need a real-world test
McAfee's current family-plan pages advertise a live map and notifications when a child enters or leaves places such as home or school. The current Companion store descriptions don't foreground location, so confirm that the feature appears in the actual plan and child profile before making it part of a pickup or safety routine.
Grant precise background location only if the feature is wanted, then test one safe place with both devices online. Phone location isn't the child: a dead battery, disabled data, left-behind device or OS background restriction can create a stale point. Treat geofence alerts as convenience signals, not emergency guarantees.
Family requests are the healthiest part of the model
McAfee describes a request flow in which children can ask for extra time or access to a blocked app or website. That changes a hard block into a conversation and gives a parent context: homework, travel or a changed routine may justify a temporary exception. It also avoids sharing the parent password just to resolve one request.
Use temporary approval when the need is temporary, and explain the rule before enforcing it. Older children are more likely to cooperate with visible goals and a review date than with silent surveillance. The software should support a family agreement, not replace one.
Activity reports are useful, but they aren't a full record of a child's life
The current service claims device activity at a glance. That can reveal excessive use, repeated blocks or a schedule that doesn't fit schoolwork. It shouldn't be presented as a complete transcript of messages, social feeds or offline behavior unless the live feature explicitly says so.
Review patterns rather than reacting to one line without context. A blocked domain can be an ad, redirect or embedded resource rather than a deliberate visit. If a report exposes a concern, ask what happened before treating the event as proof of misconduct.
McAfee parental controls on Android
Android has the clearest current public evidence. The Companion listing is live, was updated in January 2026 and identifies app blocking, web filtering, screen-time schedules, Wi-Fi scanning and antivirus. It also states plainly that Accessibility services are used to enforce website and application blocks.
That permission is powerful because it can observe and act on interface events. Install only the McAfee LLC package reached through the plan or official Play listing, confirm the package ID and review Google's Android Accessibility guidance. Android limits: battery rules, alternate users and VPNs
Android vendors aggressively suspend background apps, which can delay policy sync or activity reporting. Allow the permissions and background operation requested by the current setup, but don't disable every battery safeguard indiscriminately. Recheck after an operating-system update because permission states can change.
Test secondary users, guest mode, work profiles and any VPN or private-DNS configuration that the child can access. A parental-control app may cover the main profile while another profile or network path behaves differently. McAfee parental controls on iPhone and iPad
The live US Companion listing supports iPhone and iPad and requires iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. It advertises app blocking, web filtering, screen-time schedules, Wi-Fi scanning and an outdated-OS device scan. The application is designed for child-device use with an eligible McAfee plan, not as a standalone parent console.

iOS profiles and network controls deserve special care
A parental-control service may use a management profile, local VPN or network extension to enforce filtering. Inspect the exact prompt and publisher during setup, and don't approve an unexpected profile sent through email or a website. Apple documents how to review and remove configuration profiles under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
Removing the app icon may not remove the associated profile, while removing the profile first can break protection or lock the migration into an uncertain state. Keep parent access, disable the child's policy from the authorized console, then remove the app and any remaining profile through the documented route. Record the original settings before changing them.
McAfee parental controls on Windows
McAfee's current family marketing says parents can view activity from a phone or desktop, and the system-requirements page includes supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds under Safe Family. We didn't find a public Windows package named Companion comparable to the mobile store listings. That makes the account-provided installer or existing McAfee client the only reliable route.

A child should use a standard Windows account
Any parental-control product is weaker when the child has local administrator rights. An administrator can install alternate software, change services and alter network settings that a standard account can't. Create a separate standard account for school and everyday use, and keep the parent administrator credentials private.
Test controls in the exact Windows account assigned to the child. Rules applied to one profile may not cover another local account, a guest session or a browser signed into a different identity. If a school manages the device, don't layer personal management software over its policy without the school's approval.
Mac support isn't established for the current child-control route
The old Safe Family listing explicitly said the product wasn't available on Mac. The current iOS Companion listing may be technically installable on some Apple-silicon Macs, but it says it isn't verified for macOS and describes an iPhone/iPad child app. That isn't enough to promise Mac filtering or app control.

Chromebook support also needs a different plan
The current Companion listings target Android and iOS, while McAfee's broader security system requirements include ChromeOS for some McAfee products but not a clear current Companion setup. An Android app that installs on a Chromebook doesn't automatically supervise Chrome profiles, guest browsing or school-managed accounts correctly.
Google Family Link is the first built-in route for a child's Google account and Chromebook. If the family needs third-party reporting across several platforms, choose a provider that names ChromeOS or Chromebook in current documentation. Safe setup starts in the McAfee account, not the app store
Confirm the plan includes parental controls, sign in as the purchaser and create or invite the child through the family-management flow. Use an email address or contact method the parent can recover. Follow the presented link for the child's operating system rather than searching by logo.

The safest migration sequence keeps the old control until the new one works
Don't begin by deleting the legacy Safe Family app. First confirm the plan, create the current child profile, follow the official Companion link, grant only the required permissions and test one rule. Removing the old app last preserves a working path if the new entitlement or sync fails.
Take screenshots of the current device assignment, not private activity details, and record which permissions were granted. If the migration fails, those notes separate an entitlement problem from an operating-system permission problem. They also make a clean rollback possible.
Grant permissions by function, not by habit
Blocking another app or filtering traffic requires more authority than an ordinary game. Android names Accessibility explicitly; iOS may request notifications, network or management controls. Location requires background location, and a parent shouldn't grant it merely because the prompt appears if the family doesn't plan to use location alerts.
Read the publisher, purpose and system explanation for each permission. Denying a required control can make the app look broken, while granting an unrelated one increases data exposure. Revisit permissions after setup and remove anything the chosen features don't need.
Test one block, one schedule and one request
Choose a harmless website or app, block it and confirm the child sees the expected message. Set a short schedule window and wait for both the start and release. Submit a family request and verify the parent can approve it without exposing the account password.
Only after those checks should the household build broad categories and bedtime rules. A complicated policy hides which component failed. One controlled test creates a known-good baseline that can be repeated after OS, app or plan updates.
Privacy review: the current Companion apps collect operational data
The Android store disclosure says the app may collect personal information and device or other identifiers, shares no data with third parties, encrypts data in transit and accepts deletion requests. The iOS label says contact information, identifiers and usage data may be linked to identity, while diagnostics may be unlinked. These are developer-supplied store disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.
McAfee's consumer legal and privacy hub should be read with the store label, especially for location and child profiles. Collect only the features the family needs, use separate accounts and remove stale child devices when a phone is replaced or handed down.
A child profile deserves the same account hygiene as an adult account
Use an accurate role and age without publishing extra personal detail in the profile name. Protect the parent McAfee account with a unique password and available multi-factor authentication. The parent's email inbox becomes part of the recovery chain, so it needs its own strong password and second factor.
Review family membership after a separation, device sale or change of caregiver. Tell the child what is monitored and why
Covert monitoring creates technical and relationship risks. Explain which apps or websites can be blocked, whether location is active, what activity the parent can see and how to request an exception. Use stricter controls for younger children and review them as judgment and independence grow.
A teenager who understands the goal is less likely to treat the product as a puzzle to defeat. The FTC children's privacy resources are aimed largely at businesses, but they reinforce a useful principle for families: child data deserves deliberate, limited handling.
When McAfee parental controls don't work, identify the layer first
There are four layers: entitlement, child identity, device enrollment and enforcement permissions. A missing feature tile is an entitlement issue. A rule assigned to the wrong child is an identity issue. An absent phone is enrollment. A visible phone with ineffective blocks is usually permissions, sync or platform scope.

Problem 1: the wrong Safe Family app is installed
Look at the package and store page, not the icon. The current child app is Parental Controls – Companion from McAfee LLC. An old Safe Family client, third-party APK or similarly named parental-control app may accept a login but never attach to the current child profile.
Return to the parent's McAfee account and regenerate or reopen the official setup path. Don't sideload a package to solve regional or compatibility restrictions. If the plan doesn't offer the device, choose a supported alternative rather than force an unsupported client.
Problem 2: Companion says the subscription is missing
Confirm that the parent signed in with the exact account that owns the Family plan, not another McAfee login used for an old trial or retailer purchase. Check whether the invitation was accepted under the intended child. A Companion install from the store alone can't supply the missing relationship.
If the plan came from a carrier or internet provider, its activation portal may be the authority. Save the order number and current plan screen, then use that provider's support route. Don't buy a second McAfee plan until support confirms the first one lacks parental controls.
Problem 3: the child device doesn't sync
Put both devices online, update the parent McAfee app or web session and the Companion app, then restart both devices. Set date, time and time zone to automatic. Open Companion on the child device long enough to complete any pending permission or enrollment prompt.
Apply one simple test rule and wait for a documented sync interval rather than changing five settings at once. If the device still shows stale policy, remove only that device from the authorized parent console and re-enroll it through a fresh link. Preserve the old profile until the new entry is visibly connected.
Problem 4: a blocked site or app still opens
Confirm the rule targets the exact child and exact app, then test the same browser or application named in the rule. On Android, verify Accessibility remains enabled and Companion isn't battery-restricted. On iOS, review the profile or network-control status presented by the setup without deleting it.
Check for an alternate browser, private DNS, VPN, guest profile or secondary user. Don't turn the issue into a secret contest with the child; explain the rule and remove the bypass path openly. If the feature can't cover the required platform, switch products instead of expanding permissions blindly.
Problem 5: screen-time schedules fire at the wrong hour
Automatic date, time and time zone should be enabled on the parent and child devices, especially after travel or daylight-saving changes. Confirm whether the rule means a blocked period, a daily allowance or an app-specific limit. Those controls can appear similar while calculating time differently.
Delete overlapping schedules and create one short test window. Watch when it begins and ends, then rebuild the weekly plan. If time use continues counting while an app is backgrounded or a device is idle, document the exact behavior and app version before contacting support.
Problem 6: Android keeps disabling enforcement
Reopen Android Settings and confirm Companion still has the Accessibility and background privileges required by the current setup. Battery optimization, vendor “sleeping apps” lists and permission auto-reset can suspend a rarely opened service. Use the narrow vendor-recommended exception, not a device-wide removal of power management.
After an Android update, repeat one block and schedule test. If a work profile or device-owner policy prevents the permission, don't fight the administrator's controls. A school or employer-managed phone belongs under that organization's policy.
Problem 7: iPhone or iPad stays restricted after a change
First check whether the child device has received the new policy and whether the current Companion app still opens. Review Settings → General → VPN & Device Management for the McAfee-related profile created during enrollment. Don't remove an unknown profile until the parent can confirm its purpose and has a recovery path.
If an app or network filter remains active after the child was removed, disable parental controls from the parent account, restart the device and follow McAfee's current removal steps. Problem 8: location is stale or geofence alerts are late
Confirm location is part of the current plan, then check precise background location, mobile data, notifications and battery restrictions. Open the app on the child device and refresh from the parent side. A location timestamp matters more than the pin's confident appearance.
Test a large safe zone before relying on a narrow school entrance boundary. Dense buildings, weak GPS and disabled data can delay a transition. Use ordinary communication and the platform's family-location tools as appropriate; no third-party geofence should be the sole emergency plan.
Problem 9: the parent receives no alerts
Check notifications for the parent McAfee app, email rules and any web dashboard, then create a known test event. The child device also needs the network and background operation required to report that event. A silent parent phone doesn't prove the child policy failed.

Problem 10: Companion drains battery or slows the device
Location, web filtering, Accessibility monitoring and antivirus work can consume battery. Record battery use over a normal day, not immediately after installation or an OS update. Disable an unused feature such as background location before disabling the enforcement service the family actually needs.
Update the app and OS, restart, then compare with one feature at a time. If performance remains poor, export or record the rules and migrate to a lighter supported alternative. A parental-control app that makes the phone unreliable undermines both safety and trust.
What to send McAfee support
Provide the plan name, purchase channel, country, parent account email in a private support form, child-device model, OS version, Companion version, package ID and the exact failed test. Include timestamps and a screenshot that excludes private browsing history, location and child identifiers wherever possible.
State whether the issue is entitlement, enrollment, sync, blocking, schedule, location or removal. That vocabulary keeps the conversation on the failing layer. Never post order numbers, profile QR codes or invitation links in a public forum.
Migrating from legacy Safe Family to Companion
Don't assume old children, places, schedules and exceptions automatically transfer. Inventory the rules that still matter, remove obsolete ones and recreate a minimal current policy through the Family plan. Keep the legacy parent access available until the new child device passes the block, schedule and request tests.
Once the current route works, disable legacy controls from the old parent account if it remains accessible, then remove the old client and any orphaned profile. Check the next renewal statement for an old app-store subscription. A working new plan doesn't automatically cancel a historical Apple, Google or McAfee billing record.
How a parent should remove McAfee parental controls
Use the authorized parent account to release or remove the child device first. Then follow the current operating-system uninstall path and remove only the profile or device-admin permission associated with the retired client. Restart and verify ordinary web access, app installation and account sign-in.
This page doesn't provide bypass steps for a child or an unauthorized user. If an adult owns the device but no longer has the parent account, use McAfee support with proof of ownership. Removal and cancellation are separate jobs
Deleting Safe Family or Companion doesn't cancel a McAfee Family subscription or an old app-store renewal. Check McAfee My Account, Apple subscriptions, Google Play subscriptions and the original carrier or retailer. Save cancellation confirmations and the final coverage date.
Conversely, canceling a plan can leave a child app and management profile on the device. Release the policy and remove the software before coverage ends when possible. That order avoids an orphaned client with no active parent console.
Best Safe Family alternatives depend on the devices
There's no universal winner. Apple Screen Time is the cleanest first choice for an Apple-only household; Google Family Link is the first choice for Android and Chromebook; Microsoft Family Safety fits Windows and Xbox; Qustodio covers a wider platform mix; Norton Family is compelling when its security bundle already fits the home.
