Bitdefender Plans and Pricing: What Each Upgrade Actually Buys
Bitdefender's four main tiers use the same five-device Individual limit, so the useful question isn't “How much protection can I buy?” It's whether you need unlimited VPN, active identity monitoring or US-only credit and identity-theft benefits.

Quick answer: choose Total Security at $59.99 when five devices and the 200 MB/day/device VPN allowance are enough. Premium Security is the practical upgrade for someone who would otherwise buy a separate unlimited VPN. Ultimate adds continuous identity monitoring, while Ultimate Security Plus is a US identity-and-credit product whose insurance and eligibility terms matter more than its antivirus engine. A household needing separate profiles or parental controls should compare the Family versions, not squeeze everyone into one Individual account.
Bitdefender plans and US prices in 2026
We checked Bitdefender's US Individual, Family and renewal pages on July 29, 2026. The prices below are the one-year amounts publicly shown that day before tax. Bitdefender can change promotions and standard prices, and an account, retailer, app store or another country may show a different offer. Save the cart and order email instead of treating a search-result price as part of your contract.
| Plan | Individual | Family | Accounts / devices | Main upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total Security | $59.99 | $79.99 | 1 / 5 or 5 / 25 | Core suite; Standard VPN with 200 MB/day/device |
| Premium Security | $79.99 | $99.99 | 1 / 5 or 5 / 25 | Unlimited VPN, Scam Protection Pro and Email Protection |
| Ultimate Security | $89.99 | $119.99 | 1 / 5 or 5 / 25 | Digital identity monitoring, breach alerts and identity score |
| Ultimate Security Plus Standard | $119.99 | $179.99 | 1 / 5 or 5 / 25 | US credit monitoring, identity-theft insurance and restoration benefits |
The official storefront currently lists Individual plans from $59.99 and Family plans from $79.99. Dedicated Ultimate Security Plus pages also expose higher Extended variants—$139.99 Individual and $199.99 Family during our check—but the exact credit bureaus, insurance limits and household benefits need a line-by-line terms review. We don't assume “Extended” means more malware protection.
Bitdefender's public renewal center showed one-year options at the same headline amounts for the main tiers on our check date. That's a useful current reference, not a guaranteed year-two price. The company's subscription terms allow renewal at the then-current price and say it will notify customers before charging. If your order confirmation names a different amount, term or sales channel, that specific order evidence matters more than this table.
What changes between Total, Premium, Ultimate and Plus
The antivirus foundation isn't progressively “stronger” in the way the four-column pricing ladder suggests. Total Security already contains the core cross-platform malware, web and ransomware defenses, Bitdefender Password Manager and the Standard VPN allowance. Higher plans bundle privacy, scam and identity services around that security layer. Our full Bitdefender review covers current independent lab evidence and performance; this guide isolates the purchasing decision.
| Feature | Total | Premium | Ultimate | Ultimate Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual device limit | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 |
| Password manager | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| VPN traffic | 200 MB/day/device | Unlimited* | Unlimited* | Unlimited* |
| Scam Protection Pro | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Protected email addresses | No | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Continuous identity monitoring | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Credit monitoring / identity insurance | No | No | No | US eligibility and terms apply |
| Family parental controls | Family edition | Family edition | Family edition | Family edition |
*“Unlimited” describes the subscription's data allowance, not infinite speed or unrestricted use. VPN availability, server features, fair-use controls and streaming results can change by platform and location. Total Security's 200 MB allowance resets daily for each covered device.
Ultimate Security Plus deserves the most caution. Credit monitoring and insurance are regulated, eligibility-based services, not universal software features. The offer is designed for eligible US customers, and benefit limits, exclusions, enrollment steps and household coverage are defined by the policy documents. Someone outside the supported market should assign those rows zero value, however prominent the badge looks.
Which Bitdefender plan should you choose?
Total Security: best for most buyers
Choose Total when you want Bitdefender's security suite on up to five devices and already have a VPN, rarely use one, or need only brief emergency traffic. It's $20 below Premium in the current Individual line-up. That saving disappears if the 200 MB cap pushes you into buying a separate VPN anyway.
Premium: best bundle for active VPN use
Choose Premium when an unlimited-data Bitdefender VPN, Scam Protection Pro and protection for two email addresses are tools you'll use. The current Individual premium is $20; the Family premium is also $20. Judge the VPN as a separate product before assuming the bundle beats your existing provider.
Ultimate: for active identity monitoring
Ultimate adds $10 over Premium for an Individual plan and $20 for Family at the prices checked. That's rational when continuous identity monitoring, breach alerts and the identity score replace another paid service. It's unnecessary if you only want antivirus and unlimited VPN.
Ultimate Plus: read the policy first
Plus is for an eligible US buyer who understands the credit-monitoring and identity-theft terms. Don't buy it for a higher security-engine score: the deciding value is recovery support, monitoring breadth and insurance conditions. Confirm whether Standard or Extended is in the cart.
A careful Windows 11 user who doesn't need the bundle also has a fifth option: keep the operating system's built-in protection. Our Bitdefender versus Microsoft Defender comparison explains what the paid suite adds. If price isn't the only concern, the Bitdefender alternatives guide compares lighter suites, free options and bundles with different renewal models.
Is Premium Security worth $20 more for unlimited VPN?
Total Security's Standard VPN allowance is 200 MB per day on each device. That's enough to secure a short airport login, send messages or handle a small banking session. It isn't enough for normal all-day browsing, video calls, large app updates or streaming. The cap is best understood as an emergency privacy tool and a chance to test connectivity, not a full VPN subscription.
Premium currently costs $20 more for both Individual and Family. If you already pay more than that each year for a VPN and Bitdefender's app meets your location, speed, privacy and streaming needs, the upgrade can be economical. If you use advanced routing, require a particular audit posture, run the VPN on a router or need reliable access in a restrictive country, a specialized provider may still be the better fit. Our dedicated Bitdefender VPN review will test that product decision rather than awarding Premium by spreadsheet.
The daily cap is per device, but that doesn't make it a pooled family allowance. One laptop can't borrow the unused quota from four phones. Conversely, five devices performing only brief high-risk tasks can each use their own allowance. List the situations in which you actually enable a VPN before paying for unlimited data.
Bitdefender Individual vs Family: the account limit matters
Individual plans cover one Bitdefender Central account and up to five devices. Family plans cover five accounts and up to 25 devices and add parental controls. The $20 Total/Premium Family premium is easy to justify when two adults and children need separate profiles, but device count alone can mislead: three people with two devices each already exceed Individual's five-device ceiling, while one enthusiast with six devices still needs to decide whether a family subscription is sensible.
Separate accounts improve management boundaries. An adult can protect personal devices without exposing every setting to the person administering the household, and children's profiles can carry age-appropriate controls. Before buying, map each phone, tablet and computer to a person, supported operating system and expected feature. iOS doesn't gain desktop-style file scanning merely because it occupies one of 25 slots, and Windows usually receives the broadest feature set.
| Household | Likely fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One person, 1–5 devices | Individual | No need to pay for unused accounts and 20 extra slots |
| Two adults, up to 5 devices total | Depends | Individual is cheaper; Family gives separate accounts and simpler household growth |
| Family with child profiles | Family | Parental controls and five-account design are the meaningful upgrade |
| More than 5 but no more than 25 devices | Family | Device capacity avoids removing and reassigning installations |
How Bitdefender renewal and cancellation actually work
Bitdefender says it sends a renewal notification 45 days before subscription expiry. Automatic renewal can then charge the current standard price associated with the order, not necessarily the promotional amount remembered from the first purchase. Because prices and offers move, set your own reminder before the vendor email, then compare the account notice, public renewal center and alternatives while there's still time to act.
For a qualifying direct order linked to the same email, Bitdefender documents the path as Central → My Subscriptions → My Payments → View Details → Manage your subscription and renewal options. Its official automatic-renewal instructions also include a Verifone payment-processor route. The second route is important when Central doesn't expose the expected control or when the original order lives with the processor.
- Find the exact order. Match the order number, product, term, email and card statement; don't alter a similarly named retail licence.
- Use the billing owner's route. Direct/Verifone orders, Apple, Google and retailers have different controls and refund desks.
- Turn renewal off deliberately. Continue until the account shows the new state rather than stopping at a retention offer.
- Save evidence. Keep screenshots and confirmation email, then revisit the subscription page to verify the status.
- Keep protection through the paid term. Disabling renewal is a billing decision; it doesn't require uninstalling a working subscription immediately.
Adding a discounted retail key doesn't necessarily cancel a separate recurring direct subscription. This is one of the most avoidable sources of double-billing complaints: the new entitlement extends or creates protection while the old payment agreement remains active. The dedicated Bitdefender cancellation and refund guide will walk through each billing channel with screenshots and failure checks.
Bitdefender's 30-day refund window
Bitdefender's official refund policy states a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible initial direct purchases and automatic renewals. That doesn't automatically govern a licence bought from Amazon, Newegg, an app store or another retailer. The merchant that took the payment usually controls the process, and a marketplace listing can impose different conditions.
Use those 30 days as a compatibility test, not a date to remember after something goes wrong. Finish the first update and scan, reboot, open your normal work apps, copy large files, join calls, launch games, test the VPN and inspect false alarms. Check that every expected Mac, Android and iOS feature really exists. Finally, open Central and verify the device list, payment entries and renewal state before deciding to keep the plan.
If you request a refund, prepare the order number, purchase email, payment channel, charge date and reason. A refund may end the licence, so install or enable replacement protection before leaving the machine exposed. For installation friction, use our Bitdefender installation and setup guide; if you're leaving completely, follow the complete Bitdefender removal guide rather than deleting application folders by hand.
What current user reports add to the pricing page
Current community discussions are useful because they reveal where real people lose the billing trail. A March 2026 r/BitDefender thread centers on the difference between an introductory promotion and standard renewal. A July 2026 cancellation discussion shows why both Central and the payment-processor route belong in a practical guide.
These posts don't establish a universal overcharge rate, and we don't use anonymous reports to override contract terms. They do support a concrete workflow: identify the merchant, save the first order, confirm the renewal state after changing it and inspect the card statement. Search results also contain fake “renewal” warnings and support numbers, so start from Bitdefender Central or a typed official domain rather than calling a number in an unsolicited email.
Bitdefender pricing FAQ
How much is Bitdefender Total Security in 2026?
Bitdefender's US site showed Total Security at $59.99 for one Individual account and five devices, or $79.99 for five Family accounts and 25 devices, when checked July 29, 2026. Prices are for one year before tax and can change by market, promotion and seller.
What is the difference between Bitdefender Total and Premium?
Premium includes the Total Security foundation but replaces the 200 MB/day/device Standard VPN allowance with unlimited VPN data and adds Scam Protection Pro, anti-tracker functionality and protection for two email addresses. Both current Individual plans cover five devices.
Does Bitdefender Total Security include unlimited VPN?
No. Total Security includes 200 MB of VPN traffic per day on each device. Premium, Ultimate and Ultimate Security Plus include unlimited VPN data, subject to the service's terms, supported platforms and network availability.
Is Bitdefender Ultimate better at detecting malware than Total?
Bitdefender markets the tiers around a common core security suite. Ultimate's meaningful additions are identity monitoring, breach alerts, identity score and expert guidance, not a promise of a stronger antivirus engine. Buy it when those services solve a real need.
Does Bitdefender Family include parental controls?
Yes. The current Family line is designed for five accounts and up to 25 devices and includes parental controls. Capabilities still vary by child device and operating system, so confirm the exact platform support before buying for one feature.
How much does Bitdefender cost to renew?
Bitdefender's US renewal center displayed one-year main-tier options matching the public headline prices on July 29, 2026, but that isn't a permanent price guarantee. Your subscription can renew at the then-current price disclosed for the order, so check the 45-day notice and Central before billing.
Can I turn off Bitdefender auto-renewal?
Yes. Eligible direct subscriptions can be managed through Bitdefender Central under My Subscriptions and My Payments, while some orders use the Verifone route. App-store and retailer purchases must be managed through the company that billed you.
Can I get a refund after Bitdefender auto-renews?
Bitdefender states a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible automatic renewals and initial direct purchases. Retailer and app-store purchases follow that seller's policy. Contact the correct billing party with the order number and charge date.
Should I buy Bitdefender from a retailer?
A legitimate regional retail licence can be cheaper, but verify the seller, device count, term, activation deadline and refund route. Adding a retail key may not cancel an existing direct auto-renewing subscription, so check every active payment agreement separately.
Verdict: Total is enough until a specific service proves otherwise
Bitdefender Total Security is the rational starting point for most buyers. It gives one user five device slots and the main security suite for $59.99 at the price checked. Premium earns its $20 upgrade when Bitdefender's unlimited VPN can replace another subscription. Ultimate is a narrower identity-monitoring decision, and Ultimate Plus should be treated as a US credit and recovery contract—not a prestige antivirus tier.
For families, the extra accounts, 25-device ceiling and parental controls are more important than the word “Family.” Count people and devices, test the actual platforms, save the checkout, and make renewal an annual decision.
