TotalAV for Windows Review: Excellent x64 Protection, No ARM Support
On an Intel or AMD Windows 11 PC, TotalAV has some of its strongest current lab evidence. On a Snapdragon or other ARM64 PC, the desktop antivirus isn't supported at all. Check the processor before you spend a license.

Quick answer: TotalAV gets 4.0/5 on a supported x64 Windows 11 PC. AV-TEST's latest cycle scored version 6.6 at 17.5/18 (a perfect 18/18 in March–April); AV-Comparatives measured 99.0% real-world protection with five false alarms. Performance is less clear on low-end hardware, and Windows on ARM is a hard stop: TotalAV explicitly doesn't support ARM-based Windows devices. Windows 10 can run the current client, but the operating system needs ESU after its October 2025 end of support.

TotalAV's current Windows protection is genuinely strong. On a normal 64-bit Windows 11 computer with an Intel or AMD processor, it offers real-time file and behavior monitoring, on-demand and scheduled scans, quarantine, web filtering and optional bundle tools. Two current independent labs support the protection claim, although their methods show that “perfect” is too simple a word.
The processor architecture changes the answer completely. TotalAV's current system-requirements page says Windows on ARM isn't supported, so a Snapdragon X or X2 laptop can't use the desktop antivirus merely because Windows 11 emulates many x64 applications. Our rating applies only to supported x64 systems. An ARM owner should keep Windows Security active or choose a security product whose vendor explicitly documents a current native ARM64 build.

TotalAV v6 requirements are modest—but architecture is decisive
The current system-requirements page lists Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025 for v6. Hardware starts at a dual-core Intel or AMD processor, 2 GB RAM and 2 GB free disk, with extra room for temporary and quarantined files. Installation requires administrator rights and an internet connection; automatic updates also depend on the connection.
The separate installation guide narrows the consumer build to Windows 10 21H2 or later and Windows 11 23H2 or later. That detail matters more than an older marketing page that still says Windows 7 SP1 or higher. Use the support documentation tied to the current installer, not a broad landing-page sentence.
Windows v6 and legacy v5 aren't interchangeable
TotalAV maintains documentation tabs for current v6 and legacy v5. Version 5 covers Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 21H2 and below, plus older server releases. Version 6 is the current Windows 10/11 line submitted to 2026 lab tests. A legacy installer running isn't evidence that its operating system remains safe or that current lab results apply to it.
Don't downgrade to v5 to rescue an unsupported ARM PC; both requirement sets explicitly reject ARM-based Windows devices. Don't keep Windows 7 online because an antivirus icon is green. Operating-system servicing, browser support, drivers and application patches are separate layers, and the oldest unsupported layer can undermine the whole stack.
AV-TEST gave TotalAV 6.6 a perfect 18/18 in March–April
AV-TEST evaluated TotalAV 6.6 on Windows 11 Professional 64-bit in March and April 2026. It blocked 100% of zero-day web and email threats in both months and 100% of the widespread reference set. The product earned 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability.
The usability set recorded no false web warnings, no bad behavioral warnings or blocks, and one false detection of normal software during a system scan across the two-month run. That's excellent evidence for the tested build and configuration. It doesn't prove every future update is flawless, and the 64-bit lab platform doesn't establish ARM64 compatibility.
AV-Comparatives found 99.0% real-world protection
The February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test used a fully patched Windows 11 64-bit system and TotalAV Premium versions 6.5 through 6.6. TotalAV blocked 396 of 400 malicious cases, leaving four compromised systems and producing a 99.0% protection rate. Microsoft Defender reached the same rate; Kaspersky and Bitdefender were higher at 99.8% and 99.5%.
TotalAV wrongly blocked five clean files or domains in the accompanying false-alarm test, below the report's average of eight. The result is strong but not perfect, and it explains why our verdict doesn't repeat “100%” without a test name. One lab saw no missed threats in its two-month sets; another saw four compromises across a different four-month, 400-case web-driven method.
Both protection results are useful because the methods differ
AV-TEST reports monthly zero-day and prevalent-malware percentages, everyday slowdown and a large usability set. AV-Comparatives starts from live malicious URLs and counts a system as protected only when the malware isn't running and hasn't made significant malicious changes. Its settings deliberately allow a sample to continue when a product asks the user, then judge whether another layer still prevents compromise.
Those methods answer different questions. The responsible reading is that TotalAV 6.6 has top-tier conventional Windows evidence and a strong, not leading, real-world protection rate. We keep the tested product, date and architecture attached to every number rather than averaging unrelated percentages into a fictional universal detection rate.

Performance evidence is mixed on a low-end PC
AV-TEST's standard and high-end workloads produced a 6/6 performance score. TotalAV's measured download, software-launch, install and copy impact was generally small; the standout line was popular website loading on the high-end machine, where the product measured 9% versus a 23% industry average. That's reassuring for a typical supported PC.
AV-Comparatives' April 2026 low-end performance test was less flattering. On an Intel Core i3 with 8 GB RAM and SSD, TotalAV scored 86.8 in the Procyon office benchmark against a clean baseline of 100 and received a Total Impact Score of 18.2, where lower is better. Microsoft Defender scored 12.9; McAfee led at 3.3. TotalAV wasn't the heaviest product, but it sat in the slower half of the table.
How to tell whether TotalAV is slowing your PC
Use Task Manager to compare CPU, disk and memory use at idle, during the first full scan and after a reboot. The first scan and definition update aren't a fair idle baseline. Check the scan schedule and avoid stacking a full malware scan, cloud backup, game update and Windows Update on the same evening.
If usage remains high, update TotalAV and Windows, restart, remove another real-time antivirus and test one optional component at a time. Don't select “High performance” power mode merely to hide a runaway process on a laptop. TotalAV doesn't support Windows on ARM
The vendor's requirement page uses unqualified language: “TotalAV is not currently supported on ARM-based Windows devices.” That covers Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs and other ARM64 Windows machines. The installer may refuse to proceed, or a user-mode component might appear to run without the protection driver; neither state should be treated as supported antivirus.
Microsoft's Windows ARM PC guidance warns that some third-party antivirus can't install unless it has been built or updated for ARM. Windows Security remains available for the supported lifetime of the device. Don't spend time forcing an x64 installer or disabling the protection that already works.
Why Prism x64 emulation can't fix an antivirus driver
Windows 11 on ARM can emulate ordinary x86 and x64 user-mode applications, and Prism improves that compatibility on current devices. Antivirus is different because its low-level protection depends on drivers that observe file and process activity close to the operating-system kernel. Microsoft's Windows on ARM FAQ says kernel-mode drivers must be native ARM64 binaries.
The same document says an x86 or x64 setup program can't install an ARM64 driver. Compatibility mode, running as administrator and copying an installed folder from another PC can't manufacture that binary. Wait for explicit TotalAV ARM support or choose a documented native alternative; never accept “the dashboard opens” as proof that the real-time engine loaded.
Check the processor in Settings before buying
Open Settings → System → About and find System type under Device specifications. Microsoft uses the wording “ARM-based processor” for Windows on ARM. A conventional Intel or AMD computer normally reports an x64-based processor. The model name can also help: Snapdragon X, X Plus and X Elite are ARM64 families, while Intel Core and AMD Ryzen consumer PCs are x64.
Do this check on every device you intend to cover, not just the checkout computer. A five-device plan can include supported phones and Macs while failing the one new laptop you actually meant to protect. If a license slot was consumed by an incompatible machine, remove that device from Manage Installs and confirm the slot returns before installing elsewhere.

What happens to Microsoft Defender after TotalAV installs
Microsoft says Defender Antivirus turns off when a compatible third-party antimalware program installs and registers as the active provider. The Windows Security application remains: it shows provider status, firewall and device-security information even when TotalAV owns real-time malware protection.
After installation, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection and verify the recognized provider. Then open TotalAV and confirm real-time protection remains enabled after a restart. If a subscription expires or the product is removed, Defender should automatically return; verify rather than leaving the machine in an assumed protection state.
Don't run two third-party real-time engines
Microsoft warns that two antimalware products can cause problems when both try to protect the PC. They may inspect the same file, lock resources, duplicate web filtering, disagree over quarantine or generate high CPU and disk use. More security icons don't create a stronger security model.
Uninstall the previous third-party antivirus, restart, install TotalAV and check registration. A second-opinion scanner can be useful on demand when it doesn't load a competing real-time driver. If TotalAV's toggle stays red, diagnose licensing, service registration and remnants of the old product instead of manually disabling Defender and hoping the new engine eventually starts.
The useful Windows core is smaller than the dashboard
The core jobs are real-time malware protection, quick and full scans, custom targets, scheduled scans, quarantine and WebShield. Those are the functions behind our Windows score. The dashboard may also surface System Tune-Up, duplicate cleaning, VPN, password or ad-blocking services depending on the plan and account, but a visible tile isn't proof that the entitlement is included.

Use quick, full and custom scans for different jobs
A quick scan checks common startup and high-risk locations; it's useful after an update or suspicious download. A full scan covers the broader file system and belongs after first installation, a confirmed exposure or a long gap in protection. A custom scan is the efficient choice for a USB drive, download folder or archive you can name.
Real-time protection is the part that inspects files as they're downloaded, opened or used; it's premium according to TotalAV's support page. TotalAV Free isn't the same Windows product as the paid lab build
The 2026 AV-Comparatives product is named TotalAV Premium, and the vendor describes real-time protection as a premium feature. A free scan can find files on demand, but it shouldn't inherit the paid build's continuous-protection promise. Check the installed account, license and toggle instead of judging by the application icon.
If you want no-cost always-on Windows protection, Microsoft Defender is already integrated and currently tested. Windows 10 compatibility doesn't restore Windows 10 support
Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Unsupported PCs no longer receive normal security fixes, technical support or feature updates. An antivirus can block many malicious files and sites, but it can't repair an unpatched kernel, browser component or driver vulnerability.
Microsoft's consumer Extended Security Updates path can protect eligible Windows 10 devices through October 12, 2027. Use ESU as a temporary bridge while moving to Windows 11 or replacing incompatible hardware. An installer that refuses an ARM PC is working as documented; stop rather than forcing it. An installer stuck at zero percent on a supported x64 PC may involve cached setup files, a partial installation, network filtering or remnants from an old antivirus. A red real-time toggle usually points to entitlement, service registration, an outdated build or a competing security driver.
If premium tiles ask for an upgrade, confirm account and device allocation before reinstalling. If scans stall, inspect disk health, free space and the target archive.
